“But really, who is he?” Pundit questions why Spurs replaced Mourinho with Mason

By Bruce Grove -

Former Celtic striker, Frank McAvennie has appeared to question Spurs’ decision to make Ryan Mason their latest manager ahead of their Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

Spurs fired Jose Mourinho as their manager this week and replaced him with Mason temporarily while they search for their next manager.

Mason was one of the club’s favourite servants before a head injury forced him to retire from playing at just 26 years of age while playing for Hull City.

At 29, he is the youngest manager in the Premier League at the moment.

He hasn’t held a senior managerial role before, but he started his reign with a 2-1 comeback win against Southampton yesterday.

That was the perfect way to start his time in the dugout and he would want his players to take that momentum with them into the game against City on Sunday.

But McAvennie appears to have doubts over his chances of winning the Carabao Cup.

He, however, admitted that facing Pep Guardiola would be good for his career and says winning the cup would be a major statement.

“Brilliant, who is he? No disrespect to him but really, who is he?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Good luck to him, his second game in charge is against Pep [Guardiola], that’ll be good, all the best son.

“I suppose it’s not that bad because in his situation you’d want to challenge yourself against the best.

“If you had to come in and have a chance as a promising coach, what a way to prove you’re a good coach while the club look at bringing someone else in, who knows if he’ll be there after the summer?

“Winning a cup and getting one over on Guardiola, that would be fantastic but let’s not get carried away.”

Nice to see a bit of positivity around the club again. I must admit I find it a bit odd that he’s being so written off for having this job permanently – it’s crazy that we are in a situation where everyone is arguing about bringing is a more experienced coach who’s only 4 years older than him.
