Bales agent makes a lame attempt at damage control

By Bruce Grove -

Gareth Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, has claimed that his clients’ comments about returning to Real Madrid after just one season at Spurs were taken out of context.

The attacker has come in for criticism in recent days after appearing to suggest that he was just using Tottenham to build himself up for the Euros before a return to Madrid.

Some have mocked the Lilywhites for being “used” by the attacker and that he has no plans to spend more time with them.

Barnett told ESPN that his statement was meant to be one of facts considering that the arrangement that brought him to Spurs in the summer was for a year.

He added that it was simply too early to start talking about where the Welshman would play club football next season.

Bale had a poor start to life at Spurs on his return, he did hit a rich vein of form but soon reverted back to type against Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb before being dropped once again by Jose Mourinho.

Bale has scored 10 times for Spurs this season but few have come in the Premier League and in the bigger games he has gone missing on the field of play.

Truth be told, Barnett is attempting damage control now, he knows what Bale meant and most of the fans know as well.

On top of his comments, there have been his inconsistent performances and body language, neither of which have been inspiring.

He’s said he doesn’t want to be here past the summer. It’s not some off the cuff comment that’s ambiguous, and maybe he meant something else. He said it. He stopped being a Spurs player some 8 years ago. He ain’t a Spurs player now.
Get over it mate.

And that’s what he’ll do. That’s the cut of Gareth Bale. He’s a disgrace.

Think he’s pressuring Real, telling them if I don’t get to decide where I go I’m going back to Madrid and will sit on the bench and still get my money.

Loved at HOTSPUR way. He’s not getting as much dough as people think (Kane money) he stays after training dead balling with the youts dem. He’ll score 15 this season. For me he stays. Quality

Yes, that’s what every right-thinking person on the planet would’ve thought. But then he says that.
It couldn’t have been any more concise.
‘The original plan was to do a season at Spurs and after the Euros still have a year left at Real Madrid – my plan is to go back, that’s as far as I have planned.’
Figure that out. I sure as hell cant.

The comments Bale made can’t be taken out of context. They are exactly what they are. Up front, forthright comments. There is no context. He said his plan is to go back to Madrid next season. He said he came here to get match fit for Wales. Simples.
Barnett is panicking because his boy told the truth and shot his own foot off. Both feet even.

If Bale wants to play for Wales in the 2022 World Cup he needs to be playing regularly. That is unlikely at Real so I think it was more a dig at them than at Spurs. Outside Spurs I can see very little demand for him.
