Antonio Conte takes a dig at Jurgen Klopp after the 2-1 defeat at home

By Mehdi Gokal -

Antonio Conte couldn’t help but take a dig at Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after his team suffered a 2-1 at home by the Reds.

Tottenham trailed 2-0 at halftime due to some defensive lapses, but the Lilywhites fought back in the second half and put Liverpool under immense pressure, as has been the case for the last two weeks, when Spurs had to make late comebacks to win games. This time, however, Liverpool held on despite a late goal from Harry Kane, resulting in a home defeat.

When the two sides met last time out in May, Jurgen Klopp criticised Antonio Conte’s team for their defensive style of play. He accused Spurs of playing too defensively, saying that he does not ‘like this kind of football’.

He said:

“I’m sorry I’m the wrong person for that [defensive football], I don’t like this kind of football. But that’s my personal problem.

“I think they [Spurs] are world-class, and I think they should do more for the game. I think the game against us they had 36, 38 per cent possession [35% was the reported figure].

“But it’s my problem. I cannot coach it. So that’s why I cannot do it. So yes, world-class players block all the balls, really difficult. Fine, whatever. fine, absolutely fine. I just can’t. I respect everything they do, but it’s not me.”

After the game, Conte made a sarcastic reference to Klopp’s comments. He said:

‘Before I answer the [first] question, Jurgen was happy with the way that we played tonight? Yeah? It was important to know his opinion.

‘Jurgen is a really good coach but at the end tonight we are talking about a defeat and I’m happy with the game that we played at Anfield. The final result was 1-1 and it was better.’

Cheeky that from Conte!

Klopp’s got a point though, even if he didn’t need to share it with the rest of the world…
