Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has made a surprising move by including Sergio Reguilon in the squad for the ongoing season.
Despite being on the periphery since Postecoglou’s appointment, the Spanish left-back has been named in Spurs’ 25-man Premier League squad for the 2024-25 campaign.
According to the official Premier League rules, clubs must submit their squad lists after the transfer window closes, and Reguilon has been included for Tottenham.
This comes as a surprise, given that the 27-year-old defender was widely expected to depart North London during the summer transfer window. Despite interest from the Turkish side Fenerbahce after the English window shut, no deal was finalized.
Initially, Postecoglou had signalled that Reguilon did not fit into his long-term plans, with Destiny Udogie cementing his place as the first-choice left-back following an impressive run of performances last season.
However, Reguilon’s inclusion in the squad suggests that he may now be considered as a backup option, especially given the demanding schedule that lies ahead for Spurs.
The Spaniard, in the final year of his contract, had been linked with various moves over the summer but ended up staying at the club. His addition to the squad highlights Postecoglou’s intention to keep his options open as Tottenham aim to strengthen their domestic campaign.
With the North London derby approaching, Reguilon’s surprise inclusion offers additional defensive cover should Postecoglou need to call upon him in this high-stakes fixture.
