Analysis: How Hojbjerg Was Spurs’ Anti-Winks Against Burnley

Pierre’s passing was on point, and the 25-year-old hit a 95% successful passing accuracy, which he’s only equalled a couple of times since his record of 96% against Manchester United on 04.10.2020 when we beat them 6-1.

If we break down his passes to see what he actually up to, there’s nothing nasty in there; just 9 back passes, and the bulk of his forward passing was 86% accurate, in fact, nobody passed forwards more effectively for Tottenham.

If we look at Hojbjerg’s link-up play, our #5 most frequently passed to Serge Aurier, then Davinson Sanchez.

Sliding tackle on the dance floor

The most important benefit of Hojbjerg, beyond his Terminator type demeanour, is that he provides a very fast thinking defensive shield to the side. Hojbjerg is also to a great extent the Anti-Winks, virtually every ball he plays is about maintaining the forward momentum. For example, it is easy to see him playing in a Manchester City shirt.

If you look at his passing map, then you see that he is very responsive to where he needs to be. Admittedly this map is a little distorted from what we might ordinarily expect, but then Burnley did give us so much space to play in.

More, please.

Hojbjerg is on the money always gives 100% with no panic. The players who panicky when they come under pressure Dier Winks Sanchez Sissoko I can add Ben, Aurier is another level he loses his mind altogether and he has no middle ground him is either he plays good or causes a penalty and red card which is another extreme it is my opinion and I can be wrong.

Spurs won’t get that space or time on the ball from many other teams. Arsenal are pressing high, if we let Sanchez,Dier or Aurier try to pass out from the back we will be in trouble.

It will be interesting to see how José counters that pressing game.

Great player. Referring to Doherty, Keane said yesterday “is a 15M player going to improve Spurs?” – well we got Pierre for 3M and KWP, so I guess the answer is yes.

Hopefully more such gems will be unearthed in the summer – lose Dier, Winks, maybe Doherty and get a CB, a CM, possibly a RB and a keeper.
