Young Tottenham striker Alejo Veliz is on the verge of an early return to North London, with Espanyol reportedly planning to end his loan spell midway through the season.

The Argentine forward, who signed with Spurs in August 2023 on a six-year deal valued at £13 million, has struggled to leave a lasting impression during his time with the Spanish club.

Espanyol considering terminating Alejo Veliz loan deal

According to the report from AS, Espanyol are weighing the option of terminating Veliz’s loan as the January transfer window progresses.

As per the report, the club’s recent decision to allow Veliz to skip training this week has further fuelled speculation of his imminent departure. Although he delivered a match-winning goal against Rayo Vallecano earlier in the season, his overall lack of consistency has led to this disappointing turn of events.

It adds that the next few hours will be crucial to determine his future, but it appears that Veliz’s loan spell at Espanyol may be coming to an end.

During his stint at Espanyol, the 21-year-old has had a challenging campaign, registering just four goals in 16 appearances across La Liga and the Copa del Rey. His limited minutes on the pitch, which include being an unused substitute in four of Espanyol’s last seven league matches, have raised doubts about his role in the squad.

Tottenham now face a critical decision regarding Veliz’s development. The young striker remains a promising asset under contract until 2029, but his next steps require careful planning.

One possibility is integrating Veliz into Ange Postecoglou’s squad for the remainder of the season, particularly as Spurs deal with injury concerns and depth challenges.

Alternatively, arranging another loan move—ideally to an English club—could provide him with the opportunity to adjust to the physical demands and tempo of English football, which would most likely be the course of action for Spurs as suggested by recent report.

Meanwhile, as per club insider John Wenham, the Spanish club are expected to make an announcement on the player ‘within a couple of days’.

As Tottenham evaluates the best path forward, the priority will be to ensure Veliz’s growth aligns with both the club’s immediate requirements and its long-term goals, maximizing the potential of this talented prospect.
