Tottenham are reportedly preparing to recall Argentine striker Alejo Veliz from his loan stint at Espanyol, signalling another pivotal moment in the young forward’s journey since joining the club.
Veliz signed with Spurs in August 2023 from Rosario Central for a reported £13 million, but his transition to European football has not been without challenges.
While the 21-year-old showed early promise at Espanyol, his form has waned in recent weeks. He has struggled for regular game time, sitting as an unused substitute in four of Espanyol’s last seven league fixtures.
This season, Veliz has made 16 appearances across La Liga and the Copa del Rey, scoring four goals. However, his inconsistent opportunities have sparked concerns about whether his loan spell is effectively contributing to his growth.
John Wenham, a prominent Spurs insider, has weighed in on the situation, predicting that Veliz’s return from Espanyol may be imminent. Wenham believes Tottenham will likely recall the forward soon, with an official announcement expected shortly.
The pundit also emphasised that Veliz might gain more from a loan move to an English club, where he could acclimate to the physical and fast-paced style of the Premier League.
Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said:
“I expect that Véliz will be sent back from his loan.
“I think that might be announced within a couple of days. At that point, Tottenham will really need to decide what they want to do with him.
“He’s probably better suited heading out on another loan, ideally in English football. This is another loan which hasn’t been a great success after his time with Sevilla last year.”
Veliz’s stint at Espanyol mirrors the challenges he faced during his previous loan at Sevilla, which also fell short of expectations. Despite scoring his first Spurs goal in a 4–2 loss to Brighton in December 2023, the Argentine has yet to cement his place as a dependable option for the North London side.
Manager Ange Postecoglou now faces a critical decision regarding Veliz’s development: integrate him into the first-team setup for the remainder of the season or arrange another loan spell, potentially within English football, to better prepare him for future success.
Veliz’s potential remains evident, but Tottenham must tread carefully to ensure his path aligns with the club’s ambitions and his career trajectory.
