‘a sigh of relief…’ – James Maddison breaks silence on summer long transfer links with Tottenham

By Mehdi Gokal -

James Maddison has admitted that there is a ‘sigh of relief’ now that the transfer window has closed, after being linked with Tottenham and Newcastle United all summer.

Spurs are long-term admirers of the attacking midfielder. And, according to Fabrizio Romano, they have “excellent relations” with his agent, which added fire to the speculations.

However it was not Tottenham who made an official approach for the England playmaker but rather the newly oil-riched Newcastle United who reportedly made multiple bids for Maddison. Leicester City were asking for £60m but Newcastle’s two bids were £40m and £45m, both of them swiftly rejected by the Foxes.

Maddison is an important player for them, and they didn’t want to lose him for less than his transfer value. Newcastle walked away from the talks after their failed second offer but there were rumours of a late Spurs swoop at the time, but nothing came of it.

After the weekend’s defeat to Spurs, James Maddison was asked about the summer transfer speculations during an interview with Sky Sports. He said (via Evening Standard):

“After it shuts, I think there is a bit of a sigh of relief, especially some of the staff at football clubs. I think it definitely can be [a chance for others to shine given not many players joined].

“In tough times, you need your big players and your top players to grab the team. And stick the team on your back, at times.

“Sometimes you need a magical moment from a player. One magical moment, a goal outside of the box into the top corner, which can just kick your season.

“As a big player in this team, that’s my responsibility. That’s why I will keep trying to score and assist, as much as I can. But it has to come from everywhere.”

Leicester fans will be relieved that Maddison remained with the club over the summer. He is one of the players who has the ability to pull them out of their current situation and back up the Premier League table.

But given their terrible start to the season, things do not look too good for Brendan Rodgers’ team and if a top 4 team comes for him, it will not be surprising if Maddison decides to make the move.
