Swansea chairman, Julian Winter has defended the club’s decision to sell Joe Rodon to Tottenham in the last transfer window.
The Welsh side has come under some criticism for selling their academy product on the cheap after Daniel Levy was able to land the defender late in the transfer window for £11m plus add-ons, (BBC).
The defender was arguably the most valuable player at the club and they had looked for a much higher fee before selling him.
Spurs weren’t looking to sign Rodon earlier in the transfer window, and they only turned towards him after they missed out on a number of targets.
The defender’s transfer fee has been said to be too small for his quality, but Winter explains that they had to accept Tottenham’s offers because they didn’t really find that many suitors for him.
He adds that the club had offers from some other teams and they held talks, but those talks weren’t leading anywhere good in terms of achieving a sale.
He said, as quoted by Football London: “There was only one club in for Joe. (That reduced Swansea’s) ability to negotiate better fees with other clubs. We did try with a couple of other clubs, but that wasn’t going anywhere.”

Big fish eat little fish
They know they let him go cheap in today’s market, but they needed the money, and the player wanted the move.
