Young Tottenham star will not develop well in this kind of environment and pundit knows who is at fault

By Bruce Grove -

Dane Scarlett is the next star tipped to make a breakthrough into the Tottenham first team, but is he being given the right environment to develop well?

The striker led the line for Tottenham in the Europa Conference League match against Vitesse on Thursday and wasn’t effective.

However, he was surrounded by underperforming players after Nuno Espirito Santo fielded mostly reserve players.

Noel Whelan says the players let the striker down and if Spurs want him to reach his potential, he needs to be surrounded by their best stars.

He told Football Insider: “The thing is, if other people aren’t producing, the experienced players around you, I feel sorry for young players.

“It makes it a lot more difficult for them to progress and improve in their own game.

“The players let the manager down. The manager gave a chance to the players out there.

“There’s no doubt in my mind they should be going out and winning that game, whether they leave star men out or not.

“It just puts more pressure on the players and the manager when you can’t go across and beat a team you should be beating. It still shows underlying problems with players’ attitudes.”

Nuno Espirito Santo has trusted Scarlett in cup matches so far and this shows he has a strong interest in the player.

However, he would truly develop faster and better if he is played alongside the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in tough Premier League matches.

It is hard for chances to open up for him in these games, but Nuno could start by handing him a few minutes before some of the matches end.

He could also develop faster if he moves out on loan, but that is too much of a risk considering how Troy Parrott is struggling at the moment.

He needs to play better. It was a disappointing performance from young Scarlett, not the first one either and frankly his body language left a lot to be desired. Markanday looked much livelier when he came on and displayed a far more energetic and upbeat attitude. I agree it’s difficult when you’re a young player, but the cream still rises to the top. Lets hope this boy Scarlett is more Harry Kane than Josh Onomah! On his last two first team showings I have my doubts.
