Tottenham Hotspur’s trophy drought is by far the longest of the so-called ‘big six’, but when will it end?
That’s been a common source of debate among fans and pundits alike and has resurfaced on talkSPORT this week, with ex-Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara locking horns with Ally McCoist.
O’Hara played 56 times for Spurs between 2005 and 2011 after emerging from the club’s youth system, scoring seven goals.
The former midfielder was part of Tottenham’s last trophy-winning side that lifted the EFL Cup back in 2007/08, making two appearances during that run to silverware.
Since then, Spurs have managed another three EFL Cup finals and a Champions League final, but are yet to lift another trophy.
When will Tottenham next win a trophy? O’Hara & McCoist debate
When will the agony end? Well, Spurs are still going strong in the EFL Cup and Europa League, while they have the FA Cup to look forward to in the new year.
O’Hara is incredibly pessimistic about Spurs’ chances, given his affiliation with the club.
In fact, it’s former Rangers striker McCoist who was championing the Lilywhites’ credentials when the two came to blows in the following conversation (transcribed by Spurs Web):
McCoist: “It would not surprise me in the slightest if Tottenham won something this year.
O’Hara: “Are you having me on, Ally? Are you trying to wind me up?”
McCoist: “I promise you I am deadly serious. I genuinely think Tottenham could win a cup. No chance of the league.”
O’Hara: “I know what you are doing here, you are trying to set me up so you can clip this up and get me to come back on to say ‘Spurs are back’ and I look like an absolute doughnut.”
McCoist: “My hand on my heart. The reason I am saying it is because Ange has already come out and said he generally wins things in his second year, which is factually correct.”
O’Hara: “As much as we play some good football, you can’t win anything like that.
McCoist: “I tell you why I think so. I might be proved totally wrong. On your day, as you’ve proved in the last couple of weeks, you can beat anybody which means you can win a cup. You can’t win the league.”
O’Hara: “There is no way we can win the league. The Carabao Cup maybe. But the Europa League, you talk about Europe, you can’t play against a really good side and be 2-0 down at half-time. If you play against an Italian side you’ve no chance. You might get lucky and get the Carabao Cup but you’ve got to beat Man United who have now got a new manager. That’s a tough game.
“And it is all Premier League teams in that now so it is a hard one to win. The FA Cup is always a long stint at the end of a season which is hard. The Europa League you’ve got to be solid and hard to beat. I know it is West Ham but they won that Conference League because they were hard to beat and didn’t concede goals. Spurs concede goals for fun, you can get at them all the time. You can’t win a trophy like that.”
