Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is keen on signing Totteham’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg this summer.
Hojbjerg has gone down the pecking order at Tottenham since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou last summer. He was an integral part of their first team before the Australian manager took charge and with his game time taking a major hit, the Danish international wants to part ways with the club.
According to Mundo Deportivo via SportWitness, Diego Simeone is interested in having the Tottenham defensive midfielder in his squad at Atletico Madrid.
Saul Niguez is expected to leave the Spanish giants to join Sevilla. His departure will make room on their wage bill allowing them to sign a new defensive midfielder. Tottenham’s Hojbjerg is one of the names on their wishlist. While their priority seems to be signing Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino, his arrival will have no impact on the potential signing of the Danish midfield star.
Postecoglou did involve the 28-year-old in 39 matches last season but he was on the pitch for less than 1,500 minutes in total. With Hojbjerg no longer an important part of Tottenham’s plans moving ahead, the player is keen on leaving the club. He only has a year left on his deal and the report states that the North London club are ready to sanction his departure.
Hojbjerg is expected to be available for a cut-price fee with just 12 months left on his deal and Simeone could see this as an ideal opportunity to sign a top-quality defensive midfielder who had an impressive Euro 2024 campaign with Denmark despite not being a regular for Tottenham during the 2023/24 season.
