Tottenham Hotspur’s fantastic start to the season has begun to wane after a second consecutive defeat.
After losing to Manchester United in mid-week, Spurs were hoping to bounce back but the new and improved Newcastle were too much for Conte’s team to handle as they suffered their first home defeat since Brighton in April.
Newcastle were aggressive from the start and took the lead in the 30th minute when Callum Wilson lobbed the ball into an empty net following an error by Hugo Lloris. Almiron then doubled the lead just before halftime with a brilliant solo run before easily beating the keeper.
And, following yet another poor performance from the French goalkeeper, BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has slammed him. He claimed that Tottenham will never win a trophy as long as Hugo Lloris is in goal. He went on to say that he is not the “world-class” goalkeeper that people believe he is and that Spurs need to upgrade.
“A point would have been a good result for Spurs (yesterday).
“They also need a top-class goalkeeper not a top class shot stopper. Spurs will win nothing with Hugo Lloris in goal.”
Lloris has been at Spurs for almost a decade after signing from Lyon for just £8m. He is known to be an excellent shot-stopper but makes mistakes quite frequently.
Spurs have been linked with multiple goalkeepers since the summer as long-term replacements for Lloris. One of them being Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak who is also linked with Manchester United as David De Gea’s replacement. Another name linked is Leeds United’s Illan Meslier. The latter being a more realistic target for Levy.
