“Will abandon their pursuit” – Journalist claims Spurs could end interest in transfer target due to his price

Journalist Ben Jacobs believes Tottenham may end their pursuit of Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven due to issues with his price tag.

Ange Postecoglou has so far addressed some key issues in the Tottenham squad including an attacking midfielder which they so dearly missed last season. They signed James Maddison from Leicester City for just £40m, a transfer which is being touted as one of the bargains of the summer.

They have also sorted out a replacement for veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris who is expected to leave this summer.

They signed Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli for just £16. They have also signed Manor Solomon on a free transfer.

Ange Postecoglou reportedly is looking for a defense overhaul next and Spurs have been strongly linked with Bundesliga duo, Micky van de Ven and Edmond Tapsoba.

It’s been said that Tapsoba is the priority target but the talks have advanced with Micky van de Ven as well with recent reports stating that the player is also very keen on a move to Spurs despite interest from others.

But Jacobs believes Spurs will eventually abandon pursuit of the Wolfsburg star due to his price tag and will go for the Leverkusen centre-back instead.

Speaking on The Football Terrace, Jacobs said: “I think Tottenham are looking for a centre-back, we’ve known this for quite some time. Micky van de Ven is one player that they’ve been considering and exploring, and price has been a little bit of an issue there.

“So, we know this is a key area because Ange Postecoglou is intent effectively on having ball-playing centre-backs and defenders more generally, but Spurs will abandon their pursuit of Micky van de Ven because of the fact that ultimately price is a problem and they’re still looking for value in the market.

“So, that leads the towards, perhaps, Edmond Tapsoba, another one that’s been on the list for quite some time. And he’s a top target, I think it’s fair to say, and the valuation there is somehwere in the region of £40m, some would say £45m. So, they’re going to be ones to watch over the coming weeks.”

The report from Jacobs contradicts other recent reports that suggest Spurs are closing in on a move for him. It’s interesting to see how this plays out.
