Whoever Daniel Levy Appoints Next It Simply Cannot Be Ryan Mason | opinion

By The Boy -

While the football press is full of rumours and suggestions, I think we can make a case for Ryan Mason to be moved on as soon as possible. One game’s experience may sound like a rather hasty decision, but we need to look at the picture of a whole. One does not build a billion-pound stadium and then hire someone with zero managerial experience. We’re supposed to be a blue-chip operation, not a youth opportunity scheme.

Worse yet, the performance against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final was indiscernible from any other naff performance this season. Where was the new manager bounce? Where was the Tottenham DNA that Mason was teasing us with?

What we got was a mediocre performance, expressly without heart – one that had Jamie Carragher heaping on the criticism, and deservedly so.

Mason even told Express Online after the game that he believed his players had given their all. This is wishful thinking at its very worst.

I believe that many of this squad desperately need moving on, but equally a coach needs to be brought in who has less of a competition winner look about him.

To manage a PL team you have to have your A license or be working toward it. I don’t think Ryan Mason has or is.

You may well be right about ENIC and Levy. The fact we’ve been through as many managers as we have on his watch suggests that he does indeed expect miracles. I’ve worked for lots of people like him who set impossible targets.
Given the right club and funds I am quite sure that Jose can be a success again, Tottenham under ENIC was never that fit.

I refuse to believe, given we ALL knew/know how Jose works that you give him a job and then don’t give him the tools he uses to build a winning team.

What it does tell me is how out of touch ENIC & Levy are when it comes to matters football that they appoint Mourinho and expect miracles.

Aint happening

You said he was the most successful manager ever I was offering an alternative opinion.
At his previous clubs he was able to buy the players he wanted ,at Spurs that wasn’t the option. He had to get a better tune out of the players he inherited.
I don’t think anyone expected miracles, bar perhaps Daniel Levy, but I don’t think over his tenure he demonstrated much of his self proclaimed coaching prowess.
It’s impossible to speculate whether those mentioned above would have got a better tune of this sorry lot, the fact is he didn’t

Mason has had his badges and been working with the youth team a lot longer than Ledley.

To be fair, whatever has been done for PR, we probably shouldn’t assume that he’s purely there because of good will. I mean 100% league record and lost one game against a top quality team 0-1 that we were probably expected to have been pummelled 0-4 or something.

He’s there to do a job in the present and it is what it is, let’s get behind him and hope we sneak top 4. Can’t see it though…

What manager isn’t better with better players? It’s what you can do with fewer of them is when you really earn your corn surely?

Jose was fantastic at putting together winning sides with complete backing, other than that what have we seen him do? Transform a perennial mid table side into a top four team? Avoid relegation with Fulham?

He certainly earned the right to be, but Jose was spoiled with riches back when he won stuff. Unfortunately for him, the game has changed.

The mental side of it is all part of coaching for me, if not him then there should be someone in the staff to help with that, yes.

One thing that Levy has always been fairly cute at has been the PR and spin. Mason had terrible potentiality life ending injuries and the fact that he’s come back to be a coach after stopping playing, Levy knows the good will towards the boy. I like Powell but he doesn’t have the sane back story and didn’t play for the club.

Ledley might be a bit reserved for the pressers etc, I think he was a quiet captain by all accounts so he might not have even fancied it himself.

Ryan’s appointment was the best outcome PR wise…

I think Ledley with Chris Powell would have been more experienced and more convincing for the players in the squad. Doesn’t really matter now. Let’s hope the next manger is a good one.

It’s all about timing and readiness. I don’t believe a very young Ryan was working towards this position at this stage of his managerial career. He simply took a hit for the team because of a situation created by DL.

So haggling over millions is a bad thing? You do realise this is real money. that couple million can go to Haringey council (only £45mil more to find. 3 out 3 in is about right I reckon. Too many in and out in one hit ain’t good. Just need to get rid of the over stayers. The squad plus yours ain’t that bad. Good manager with a few of his picks and we go again. We’ll be fine. YIDZ

Could ledley coach the team? The whole team? Dunno. Levy obviously thought ryan was the better option. Shoulda been Chris Powell. I hear that Kane has major say and plays a big part re organising training. He don’t pick the team though.

I agree with you I think the club gave Ryan a coaching job after his injury as it was good PR. I hope Levy hasn’t thrust into him into the first team position to deflect any criticism away from him as most fair minded people would not seek to crucify a rookie coach whatever the results from his tenure

This is true. Why? Because Levy takes so fecking long haggling over a million here and 2 million there on ins AND outs. It would take a transfer window longer than a pregnancy for him to make a dent in what needs done to fix this mess.

Why wasn’t Ledley given it Tappa? He was on Jose’s staff and if he wasn’t offered it I feel it’s a bad snub from the club. If he was offered it and turned it down then I can understand that.

If Levy has a deal in place for someone to take over in the summer then Ryan will see the 5 games out, is my thinking. However we need performances in those games that win matches and how we do it I don’t know, Ryan I imagine may struggle with loyalty to pals in his team selections and will go down the ‘show some pride’ route, but that is a virtue many players don’t have these days.

As I said I don’t disagree, however we lost 1-0 to arguably the best team in Europe
the club put Ryan in charge of a lot of players that are shot, impossible task IMO

Bertoliver

Ryan Mason will not be in charge of the side after the end of the season. He’s been forced into an invidious position by events outside of his control. I’m not sure he had much choice but to fill in and I hope that he’s not scapegoated for doing so.
However desperate the clubs search for a new manager it’s safe to say he will not be in charge next season.
The article suggests that Sunday’s very disappointing display showed that Mason was not suitable managerial material which is possibly a very reasoned argument. That being the point why was the previous manager also not subjected to the same scrutiny on the back of several very underwhelming performances

JimmyGrievance

This is going to come across as harsh but hey ho. Mason got the academy job because his career was ended early. As a product of the academy he was given a job for sentimental reasons. This is often the case as we’ve seen with Ledley being made defensive coach.

When you examine our defence and how it’s performed this season it’s clear sentiment doesn’t cut it. The same can be said of Ryan Mason. Ryan wasn’t destined to become an academy coach when he did. He got the job with zero coaching experience but sentimentality won the day. Are our u21’s better under his tutelage?

If he were by some miracle be given the job it would be based on him being cheap and of course sentimental reasons as homegrown boy does good.

Ryan Mason is clearly a nice guy. He was an ok footballer in our shirt. The one thing he’s not, is a manager of a football team who supposedly want to dine at footballs top table.

Would a top unemployed manager come in just for 7 matches ?? and obviously he had eyes on a manager who’s currently employed and wouldn’t be free until summer…….and maybe now moving to Bayern / staying at Leicester. Let’s hope we can pick ourselves up for the next 5 games !!!!

But we didn’t attack at all, apart from Toby and Gio’s shots not sure what else we did. I know it’s unfair to criticise him but he messed up with team selection and substitutions just didn’t make sense

It is a strange appointment and distinctly unfair to put Ryan in the stocks as it were, I hope he comes out of the situation not covered in rotten tomatoes, I doubt he will be smelling of roses but he will need a damn good shower whatever happens at the season ending.
