Video Evidence: Spurs’ Alfie Devine & Chelsea’ Danny Drinkwater Both Sent Off

By The Boy -

Two dirty actions do not make a right. Tottenham’s Alfie Devine began chaos with a completely nasty, two footed challenge, and Danny Drinkwater decided to lash out for ‘afters’. Then of course we got all the big boy shenanigans from the rest of the players.

What was almost was concerning was the referee, who clearly didn’t fancy getting too close to the aftermath. Perhaps in the review of this incident, it might be pertinent to discover where his bottle went?

People at Spurs and at Chelsea need to start communicating, or someone is going to end up with a career ending injury.

As I understand it, the authorities ask referees to stand back and observe during player altercations. The ‘get in there and break it up’ thing was stopped quite some time ago now. You can’t see who’s doing what if you’re involved; one of the authorities better changes I think. The question of ref bottle no longer gets a look in. Let them get on with it and remove who needs removing, quite right.

The players here were mostly pretty well controlled I thought, mostly pushing and shouting. Bloody kids.

Aggression has to be controlled, otherwise you get sent off (not helpful to anyone) or you could ruin a fellow player’s career. If this is the development squad then it needs to be dealt with now. Be aggressive, but don’t behave like a petulant little tw*t. Like Drinkwater, who should also know better…

The boy was too keen and the tackle is not good, the reaction of the seasoned professional is also wrong but understandable under the circumstances and both had to go. The typical handbags in the aftermath is pathetic, however it is the total lack of intervention from the officials and coaching staff of both teams that I find shocking. Why does this team keep losing is another question when it has thrown leads like this away before, and I wonder if any lessons will be learned by the boy and the coaches.

Devine’s challenge was an overly aggressive two-footed challenge, but it was along the ground, rather than ‘over the top’ and he did get the ball. Certainly it was illegal under today’s rules. If Drinkwater had not reacted by kicking Devine in the leg, the ref would probably have just booked Devine, but as Drinkwater clearly had to go, then it was fair enough that Devine, as the ‘agent provocateur’ was shown red also.

Devines challenge was a disgrace, but at least it was sort of football. Drinkwater response was simply nasty. We were lucky the red cards didnt turn into one for our number 9.

Admittedly the tackle was a bit ‘tasty’, but the lad’s just 16. Personally I love to see a bit of that kind of ‘old school’ fire from a kid at that age, especially playing against men in an U-23 game. His father was an old rugby league pro, like Ben Stokes’s dad and it seems like he might have a temper to match! More importantly H, the kid has bags of ability to go with that attitude and from what I understand, along with Scarlett, is the cream of the crop for his age group in the Academy.
