Vertonghen Off To Italy? Roma Joins The Suitors

By Joe Fish -

Roma are the latest club to set their sights on the free transfer of Tottenham centre-back Jan Vertonghen, according to reports in Italy.

It is probable now that he 33-year-old’s only chance of signing new terms at Spurs is a temporary extension to see out the 2019-20 Premier League campaign, which is likely to run beyond his current deal of June 30th.

Vertonghen told Belgian TV channel Play Sports last month that he expects to be a commodity in the summer as he will be available for nothing, and clubs will be penny pinching because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’m free, of course, and many clubs don’t have the money to do transfers,” he said. “Transfer-free players like me are even more coveted in the coronavirus crisis.”

Vertonghen’s prediction appears to be coming true as three of Serie A’s biggest clubs are now reportedly ready to make him an offer, despite a sharp decline in form for Spurs this season.

Tuttosport, via the Daily Mail understands that Inter Milan and Napoli are in for the defender, and so too now are Roma who are looking at cheaper options after baulking at the £18m asking price put on Manchester United loan star Chris Smalling.

I could think of three worse places to pick from to wind down your career.
