Two out, one in: Third Tottenham transfer in 24 hours close to completion

By Rob S -

January 28 had already been Tottenham’s busiest day of the winter window so far, with Christian Eriksen leaving and Giovani Lo Celso making his loan move from Real Betis permanent.

And Sky Sports have claimed a third Tottenham transfer is imminent with Kyle Walker-Peters set to join Southampton later today.

Walker-Peters will move to the Saints on loan, it is claimed.

Sky Sports wrote in a mini statement on their website: “Southampton are confident of completing a loan deal for Tottenham full-back Kyle Walker-Peters today.”

Walker-Peters would be the sixth player to leave Spurs this month. Eriksen and Paris Maghoma, who moved to Brentford for an undisclosed fee on January 16, have both left permanently, while Jack Clarke, Armando Shashoua and Brandon Austin have been loaned out.

Kieran Trippier’s move to Atletico Madrid in the summer had appeared to have opened up an opportunity for Walker-Peters to challenge Serge Aurier for a starting spot at right-back.

But new manager Jose Mourinho has made it clear through his team selection that he prefers Aurier, while the recent emergence of Japhet Tanganga has further weakened the 22-year-old’s standing in the squad.

Cedric Soares is currently in possession of the no.2 shirt at Southampton, so Walker-Peters is unlikely to be a guaranteed starter at St Mary’s either.
