“I think he’s going…” – Transfer insider shares the latest on 27-year-old linked with a move in January

By Mehdi Gokal -

Speculations regarding Giovani Lo Celso’s potential departure from Tottenham during the upcoming January transfer window have been dismissed by transfer insider Dean Jones.

Barcelona had previously shown keen interest in Lo Celso, with manager Xavi considering him a prime target.

While a move failed to materialise over the summer, recent reports suggest renewed efforts from the Spanish giants, especially following an injury setback to their rising star Gavi.

The Barcelona starlet suffered a season-ending injury while on duty with Spain and the La Liga giants have identified Lo Celso as an immediate solution.

However, Dean Jones has given an insight into Tottenham’s alleged stance, and dismissed any possibility of Lo Celso departing in the upcoming transfer window.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones highlighted the significance of Lo Celso’s role as a squad player at Tottenham.

He emphasised the value of consistent game time within a team like Spurs, indicating that even as a substitute, Lo Celso gets substantial playing minutes, which aligns with the evolving dynamics of the game.

He told GiveMeSport:

“[As a squad player], you have to consider what success is. To be part of a team like Tottenham right now, if you’re getting good game time, I think it’s enough.

“Even if you’re coming into a game as a sub, you’re playing as much of the game as the starter has, anyway. Games are extending towards 100 minutes and beyond. So, if you’re coming on at half-time, you’re getting longer than the guy who started the match in the first place. This becomes part of being a squad player, which Lo Celso has been. He’s going to get more opportunities.

“I think he’s going to be an important player, and I think the most telling factor of all here is that Tottenham are going to want to hold on to him for now, and there’s no chance of him leaving.”

TBH Says:

James Maddison’s injury proved to be a blessing for the Argentinean who got an opportunity to showcase his talent to Ange Postecoglou.

He scored back to back goals against Aston Villa and Manchester City, the two games he started. He failed to make an impact against West Ham and came off the bench against Newcastle.

Dejan Kulusevski’s performance at the 10 position against Newcastle was incredible and it will not be a surprise if takes up that role ahead of Lo Celso.

But Lo Celso is considered an important player for the squad and Ange may not want to sell him unless they sign a new midfielder.
