Tottenham have suffered a potential blow in their pursuit of Jacob Ramsey following Aston Villa’s President of football operations, Monchi’s latest comments.
Signing a new central midfielder has been one of Spurs’ top targets coming into the transfer window with the likes of Conor Gallagher and Jacob Ramsey emerging as two strong targets.
While a move for Gallagher was always going to be a complicated one, they did make an official offer for Ramsey, offering Lo Celso on top of £20m. However, Villa swiftly rejected that bid.
Monchi has now revealed the club’s stance on Ramsey, potentially ruling out his exit this summer.
He admits that the midfielder remains a very key part of Unai Emery’s team and is expected to have a big season for Villa.
He told The Telegraph:
“If we wanted to sell Jacob Ramsey, we would have sold him already because we had different offers from different clubs. But Unai has big confidence in him.”
“I think that Jacob can continue to improve his level. Last season was difficult for him because of three injuries, but Unai thinks that with Jacob, Aston Villa is the best thing — he’s convinced 100 per cent that Jacob’s level will increase this season.”
This will come as a big blow for Spurs, especially with a move for Gallagher also looking unlikely to happen.
The Blues have a deal agreed with Atletico Madrid for him and the player also also agreed terms with the Spanish side.
The move was on the verge of completion, albeit some last minute complications.
However, Chelsea continue to be in negotiations with Atletico regarding Felix, which, upon completion, should seal Gallagher’s exit as well.
