Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been linked with an exit this summer, but John Wenham feels they would rather sell Rodrigo Bentancur.
The 27-year-old Uruguayan International is reportedly on the radar of Atletico Madrid. It remains to be seen whether they come forward with an offer to sign the midfielder. He has had a mixed spell at Tottenham, and he has failed to establish himself as a key player for the club.
Can Spurs keep Romero?
On the other hand, Romero is an indispensable asset for the club. He is one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and losing him would be a devastating blow for Tottenham. It will be interesting to see if they can hold onto him and cash in on the midfielder instead.
Wenham said to Tottenham News: “Atletico are interested in Romero and Bentancur.
“It would be a good move for both players. From Spurs’ point of view, they would obviously rather sell Bentancur than Romero, in terms of ability and contractual situation.
“Bentancur will only have a year left on his deal this summer, and he has had multiple issues this season, such as suspensions and injuries. Therefore, I feel this is the perfect time for a clean break.
“I think Bentancur is a good player, and significantly better than Yves Bissouma. However, this is the perfect time for the midfielder to move on from Tottenham, and I can see a deal being agreed.”
Rodrigo Bentancur could be useful for Atletico Madrid

There is no doubt that Bentancur has the physical and technical attributes to compete at a high level, and he could be an important player for Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone has a conservative style of and the South American could thrive in his system. He has been left exposed in Ange Postecoglou’s overly aggressive system.
Perhaps a move away from Tottenham would be ideal for the player as well. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops.
It is fair to assume that keeping Romero at the club will be quite difficult. He is one of the best defenders in the world, and he will want to play for a club capable of winning major trophies. He has won everything at the international level, and he will look to succeed with a big club now.
