Tottenham looking to raid Premier League rivals for £42m ace – Romano confirms player wants to leave

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are in a ‘massive’ race to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

It is reported that Spurs are currently ‘monitoring the situation’ of the former Leeds man ahead of the January transfer window.

They are set to dive into the market for a midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window after the recent injury setbacks and the upcoming AFCON in January.

James Maddison is out till at least January while Pape Matar Sarr returned from the international break with an issue, missing the game against Villa.

And Rodrigo Bentancur, who returned from an injury after 9 months, only lasted 29 minutes on his first Spurs start since February. A terrible Matty Cash tackle resulted in an ankle injury and he is set to be sidelined again for the next two and half months.

This as well as the expected absence of Sarr and Bissouma in January is set to force Tottenham into buying another midfielder as confirmed by Ange yesterday. He refused to rule out signing a midfielder due to the aforementioned reasons.

They have been linked with several midfielders including Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips joined Manchester City from Leeds United last summer for £42m on a 6 year deal but the move has not worked out for him so far.

He failed to establish himself as a first-team regular last year and has fallen down the pecking order further with the arrival of Kovacic and Matheus Nunes. Rodrigo and even young Rico Lewis are preferred ahead of him.

The report adds that Spurs will be facing ‘massive competition’ to sign him with a number of Premier League clubs said to be interested in signing him including Tottenham, Newcastle, and Liverpool.

It also states that the player has been told ‘he is free to leave’ in January by the club.

The player is keen on leaving as he looks more regular playing time ahead of the Euros. Romano has previously revealed that as per his sources close to the club and the player, Phillips will leave City in January.

Despite the lack of playing time at City, he remains a talented midfielder who has shown him quality at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa.

And he could be a decent signing for Ange Postecoglou in January as he aims to bring in someone who can make an impact instantly.
