Tottenham want €75m star to replace underperforming £100k-a-week ace

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing the Portugal international goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

The 23-year-old has established himself as a key player for club and country. Costa started all of Portugal’s World Cup matches and he has been a reliable presence in between the sticks for Porto as well.

The talented young goalkeeper has helped Porto keep 14 clean sheets across all competitions this season and he could be the ideal long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

A report from Jornal De Noticias (h/t SportWitness) claims that Tottenham view him as the ideal alternative to the underperforming French international goalkeeper.

Lloris has not been at his best this season and his error-prone performances have cost Spurs dearly. The £100,000-a-week goalkeeper will have to be replaced as the club’s first-choice shot-stopper and Costa would be a quality acquisition.

However, the Porto goalkeeper has a €75 million release clause and it remains to be seen whether Tottenham are prepared to pay that kind of money for him.

There is no doubt that the 23-year-old is a player with immense potential and he is likely to get even better with coaching and experience. He could end up justifying the €75m outlay in the long run.

It is fair to assume that Daniel Levy will try to negotiate a more reasonable fee for the young goalkeeper and it remains to be seen how that works out.

The goalkeeping area has been a problem position for Tottenham this season and Antonio Conte must look to address that weakness so that his side can challenge for major trophies in the coming seasons.
