It was always going to happen and it was either going to be started by a pundit or some tabloid and on this occasion, it is a pundit. Former Tottenham ace Darren Bent reckons Spurs should make a move for Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings.
Bent says he would be surprised if Spurs are not in the market for the £30 million defender, who he feels would fit in perfectly at the Tottenham Stadium.
Speaking to Football Insider as quoted by TeamTalk, this is what the former Tottenham man had to say,
“Toby Alderweireld is a massive player for them and if they can keep him fit, great.
“The toughy with Spurs is – and this is where the difficulty is going to come with this team – where can they go and strengthen and where are they going to find that player?
“For them, I thought well you need defenders. I thought what about Tyrone Mings going from Aston Villa to Spurs?
“£30million, natural left-sided player, he’s got a little bit of pace about him as well and so that could work. I’d be surprised if they’re not in the market for him.”
Well, apart from the fact that Spurs have just extended the contract of Eric Dier, that they still have Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga and Juan Foyth in the squad, Mings is not that good.
Obviously, that is my personal opinion but I have seen Mings play a few times and just because he looked good against a woeful Arsenal a few nights back does not make him a top-class defender.
Playing for a team like Villa this season has meant that Mings has been kept busy and from what I have seen of him he has been very average and that is being generous.
Tottenham have enough central defenders already and while they have been poor this season they have started to get a lot better under Mourinho.
It is not an average central defender that Tottenham desperately needs but rather full-backs and a DM.

Mings needs to be more merciless in his defending, then he’d be snapped up in a flash.
Another defender from a below average team, not impressed with him at all.

Mings is average and is lucky to be in the England squad. I’d rate Sheff U’s O’Connell and Coady from Wolves higher than him. Hell I’d even take Lewis Dunk before Mings. Is he not part of the reason Villa are fighting against relegation?
