Tottenham suffer blow in their pursuit of €80m-rated midfield powerhouse

Tottenham Hotspur have hit a major roadblock in their pursuit of the services of Morten Hjulmand.

The Danish international’s impressive performances for Sporting CP have put him on the radar of multiple top clubs from across Europe. Tottenham are one of the clubs keen on signing Morten Hjulmand.

According to a report from Correio da Manhã via SportWitness, the North London club have suffered a major blow in their pursuit. The midfielder might not be allowed to leave the club this summer.

The defensive midfielder made the move to Portugal last summer from Italian outfit Leece. He has only gone from strength to strength over the last 12 months. He featured in 49 matches for them last term and even contributed towards eight goals.

Hjulmand was a rock in front of the defence and on the back of his consistent performances, Tottenham are keen on adding him to their squad. With Pierre-Emile Højbjerg expected to be on the move, the 24-year-old could be an ideal replacement. He will add depth to their midfield and will also increase the competition for a place in the starting XI.

While Spurs are keen, they are not going to find it easy to sign him as Ruben Amorim has blocked a potential move away from the club. The Sporting manager considers the Danish international an essential part of his team and will not accept losing him.

With his contract running until the summer of 2028 and the player protected by an €80m release clause, the Portuguese outfit don’t really have anything to worry about. It will be interesting to see if Spurs do end up making a bid despite knowing the Lions’ stance on Hjulmand’s future.
