Tottenham star offered escape route in January, talks held with Euro outfit

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months.

The 29-year-old was linked with an exit during the summer transfer window but he ended up staying.

A report from the Times claims that he could return to his former club Sporting CP.

The experienced defender has been frozen out of the first team and he needs to play regularly at the stage of his career.

A report from the Times claims that Sporting CP are planning a January move for the player and they have held talks regarding a potential transfer.

The utility man joined Tottenham in 2014 from Sporting CP for a fee of around £4 million and a return to his former club will certainly be emotional for the player.

The England international is versatile enough to operate as a right-back, a central defender as well as a defensive midfielder. He could prove to be a quality acquisition for the Portuguese club.

A move to Portugal would allow him to play regularly as well. He will be hoping to cement his place in the England lineup for the upcoming European Championships and January exit could be ideal for him.

He is unlikely to get opportunities at Spurs regularly and the north London outfit could benefit from getting his wages off their books as well.

Dier has been a useful servant for the club over the last few years and the time is right for both parties to go their separate ways.
