Tottenham reluctant to pay up for reported target despite ‘Conte’s pressure’

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with a move for the Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo.

The 23-year-old Italian midfielder is apparently an important target for manager Antonio Conte and the Spurs boss is currently pressurising the club hierarchy to sign him before the transfer window closes.

However, a report from Calciomercato claims that Tottenham are unwilling to meet the €60 million asking price for the talented young playmaker.

The report says, ‘Tottenham does not seem inclined to such an important outlay despite Conte’s pressure.’

It is no secret that Tottenham need to add more creativity to their midfield and Zaniolo would be a quality long-term acquisition.

The Italian is not the only creative midfielder linked with a move to Spurs this summer. The Londoners have been linked with a move for the Leicester City star James Maddison as well.

The England international is unlikely to be a cheap option either and it will interesting to see if Spurs are willing to break the bank in order to improve their midfield this summer.

Zaniolo is more of a creator compared to Maddison, who can score goals consistently.

The Roma midfielder is versatile enough to operate in the wide areas as well as the number ten position. He has the potential to develop into a top-class player and someone like Conte could help unlock his potential.

The pursuit of players is always a great read , the fact that it is us and the players involved mean that , if only an illusion , we are now on a new level above ever achieved .
Ithink it is marvellous that we play in a league where we can , on a daily basis , compare ourselves to the VERY BEST in the world . What a fabulous barometer . If we finish 4th again but close the gap on the 3rd it is satisfying , if we can climb to 3rd you’d think it was bloody exceptional because you would know that you are probably in the land of top 10 football teams in the world , as Chelsea must be right now .
We have to face the fact that ours is a mountain to climb , City and Liverpool are truly magnificent clubs performing consistently , achieving almost parity for 3 years or so – it is remarkable . Their managers are probably comparable to any that have gone before , Ferguson , Shankly , Clough et al .
We now have a manager who is on the doorstep of immortality if he can take Tottenham to those same heights , long may you reign Antonio , you have my faith , my hope my trust .
Now FFS — beat Southampton !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! C O Y S !!! [dont you just love ’em ?]

What’s ‘on the up’ mean exactly? Third?

So we’ve got Kane, Son, Kulu, Richarlison, Moura and how we’re adding another to the tune of 50+m? Can’t see it myself, especially with his injury record. A huge risk of a Lamela Mk2…

ENIC have been trading on the club’s supposed ‘POTENTIAL’ for 23 years. When does all that potential come to fruition? In another 23 years?

Conte doesn’t need to stay at a club that aren’t pushing the boat out to seriously challenge, a club he can only take so far. Unless ENIC sell up, I guarantee he will be gone within 18 months – two years max. Possibly after next summer even, who knows…

Judging by one of the latest Conte quotes (paraphrasing: if the support continues this way, there’s nothing stopping me from staying for more years), I believe he is quite happy with what he has got from Levy and Paratici so far. It’s not perfect, but it’s much better than what Levy gave Poch (after Mitchell’s departure) and Jose.

With Richarlison, I think it’s a matter of definition – the way he can deputise for Kane is that he’s a decent forward who can step in to let Kane rest. We haven’t had that really since who, Adebayor? I don’t know if we can count Llorente…

He can’t offer anywhere near the same impact, but his signing might mean that Kane won’t have to play 93 minutes of every single game. Just sub him on in the 70th minute here and there, and it will add up over the course of the season.

Zaniolo is a big no-no for me. Another Lamela.

For me, it’s too much of a mess for Conte to see out. He may have a go this season, beyond that is a complete unknown, unless the club is sold…

I find the notion that we will finish above Liverpool fanciful…Romero may or may not be our next signing..Dier Reg Royal Doherty Winky and NDembele the elephant ..where is the queue ..? Going to take a while how much time does Antonio have.

Let’s see how he Conte does in Europe’s..blind faith has got us nowhere. You think Conte will be happy being backed ‘once ‘ this is an attempt to make up for 3 missed windows. keep our current coach and get Kane to sign a contract until 2050.

Since we signed Romero there are no excuses left for the fans who claim we can’t compete in the transfer market with the big boys. He’s pure quality and would walk into any team. It’s a pity we lost out on Bremer, but we have every chance of signing Skriniar. Then we need that AM to finally replace Eriksen. I’ve had a good look at all of those linked, and I may prefer Paqueta. The reported 50m isn’t much when considering what was paid for Ndombele and Lo Celso

100% agree with all of that. Conte has been brought in as a short term ‘fixer’. He’s not been ‘backed’ at all, it’s just a myth. The only proven player of quality we have signed is Perisic and he’s 33 and came on a free, if this all amounts to being ‘backed’, then I’m the king of England.

Local rent a gob Timmy pops up with stuff about Levy ‘changing’ in order to keep Conte happy. What has he changed from, not signing a player for 12 months? Not doing proper due diligence and scouting on punts that you hoped to flog to Madrid in three years time? Honestly, the overreaction to our transfer window is laughable.

We have two substandard right wingbacks when we’re supposed to be backing a manager to which wingbacks are key to his system. We needed another quality defender, I’m not sure how much better than Davies Lengelet will be in the Premiership to be honest, if at all. Loans, free transfers, a kid who’s not ready. Bissouna and Richarlison from teams in the bottom half of the Premiership. This is just the usual nonsense I’m afraid, 23 years and counting…

Zaniolo suits Conte’s system as he can play across the front line and also as an AM. Is he the answer: not sure. He’s big and strong has decent pace and skill, but has had two major injuries.

I’d prefer Maddison who scores frequently, provides assists and can take a free-kick. Only issue is that he doesn’t suit being one of two CMs, and isn’t a wide forward.

If we had decent wingbacks, we could dispense with three up top and play someone like Maddison behind Kane and Son, which I believe would work really well. I also think Kulesevski could play as a central AM rather than stationed wide.

I’d still like us to sign Kostic as a wing back and someone like Skrinier as a no nonsense CB. We have improved, but there are still some glaring holes in the squad that need filling.

Zaniolo’s had two ACL injuries. Italian players seldom come to England at this age and most of those who do are generally coming to the end of their careers. If he’s that good a prospect, why would Roma consider selling him? We have other priorities at the moment. The RB conundrum has not been answered. Doherty and Royal are not good enough and Spence is a Levy punt. I did have a chuckle when I read the rumour that Chelsea were considering buying KWP from Southampton. Lenglet is a loan and I’m unconvinced that he’s quick enough for the PL. There’s still no back up for Kane and people who think Richarlison can deputise for him are deluded.
I still think that we lack guile and creativity in midfield, particularly when teams “park the bus” but I doubt that Zaniolo will be coming to Spurs. I see that Sevilla hare taking Telles on loan from Utd. They were heavily linked with Reguilon. So far, there is still too much deadwood on our books and and we still need to recruit in some areas. Any fan who believes that Conte is planning a long term stay at Spurs are likely to be disappointed.

I refuse to believe that Conte will be gone within a year or two, it makes no sense .
Where else has he managed where he has had the freedom and power to operate as he is doing currently ?
He is in charge at the Greatest Stadium in the world , buying and selling players on a grand scale , being touted as the best coach on a world level , has the total confidence of 99% of the supporters and is only in his fifties . You could name only a handful of other clubs that have finance , nous and respectability and POTENTIAL of Tottenham Hotspur.
It’s about time we took ourselves seriously as a football club AND business , sport and business now indelibly linked . We are Tottenham , We are a top 25 club in the world – aiming this season for top 10 if its a good year and who knows beyond that ?
He stays , he goes , but we are a superb football club and that will not change , for me , ever . C O Y S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m not sure he’s after this lad or not, however I don’t think Conte is happy with the transfer window yet. He’s still talking about how much we need to improve and the season starts next week! I can see a bust up on the horizon at this rate…

I’m not sure where exactly a player like him or Maddison fits into Conte’s system. If the fee would be close to 60m for a so far injury prone 23 year old unproven in the Premiership I think we’d be mad. I’d rather pay that on a proven quality right sided defender or wingback.

This lad had been linked with us from even before Conte arrived and from memory even before Paraciti. I can’t see this happening but I feel Conte will be more frustrated by other transfer issues rather than this.

Doherty and Royal are bang average and at least one of them needs to go and a quality replacement brought in. can’t believe they’re going to be our right wingbacks this season, after all this fanny about Levy ‘backing’ Conte. He hasn’t been ‘backed’ anything like he would have been by other clubs…
