Tottenham are actively exploring options to strengthen their squad for the next summer, with Lille midfielder Angel Gomes emerging as a key target.
John Wenham, host of the respected Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, believes that the club could seal a pre-contract agreement with Gomes in January.
Wenham sees this as a smart move, given the midfielder’s quality and potential market value.
Gomes, whose current contract with Lille expires next summer, has attracted attention due to his consistent displays and versatility across midfield roles.
With an estimated market value of €28 million, the 24-year-old has shown substantial development since departing Manchester United in 2020.
Securing him on a free transfer would not only bolster Tottenham’s midfield but also represent a valuable financial acquisition.
Wenham pointed out that Gomes would be considered a homegrown player for Spurs, having come through Manchester United’s academy.
He envisions the club offering a five-year deal, making Gomes an immediate asset worth £15 million upon signing.
John Wenham: Tottenham could agree pre-contract with Angel Gomes
Speaking to Tottenham News, the insider said:
“Gomes would count as homegrown, as he came through Manchester United’s academy.
“He would be available on a free transfer next summer. Therefore, Tottenham could agree a pre-contract with him in January.
“By signing him for free and agreeing a five-year contract with him, he would be worth £15million right away, simply based on the value attached to that contract.”
Gomes’ career revived in Lille
He joined Manchester United’s academy at six and made his first-team debut in 2017, becoming the first Premier League player born in the 2000s. After a decade at United and 10 senior appearances, he moved to Lille after failing to establish himself as a regular in the Manchester United team.
Under Paulo Fonseca at Lille, Gomes flourished in a central midfield role, showcasing his playmaking capabilities.
In the 2022–23 season, he recorded an impressive 87.89% pass completion rate and contributed significantly to Lille’s qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League. His strong form continued last season, cementing his status as a standout performer.
Gomes’ recent call-up and debut for England’s senior team further underscore his growing stature.
Johan Lange and Daniel Levy are expected to oversee negotiations to sign the former Manchester United midfielder.
If Spurs manage to finalise an agreement in January, it would be a significant acquisition, enhancing their creative depth without a transfer fee.
This potential signing aligns with Tottenham’s strategy of integrating seasoned talent with emerging players to build a squad capable of sustained success.
