Tottenham player ratings v Newcastle United – Kane and Moura get high marks

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham earned a hard-fought win in their game against Newcastle United to boost their chances of ending this season in a European place.

Newcastle were worthy opponents but class told in the end and overall it was a decent performance from the lads against tricky opposition.

Here are the Tottenham player ratings

Hugo Lloris – 7

Could do nothing about the goal and really didn’t have much to do throughout the game with Spurs defence helping him stay protected.

Serge Aurier – 7

Commendable that he could play after losing his brother. He was solid at the back and unspectacular while going forward. Cleared the ball that Newcastle scored from but deserves a 7 for his mental strength to play.

Toby Alderweireld – 7

Solid at the back, helping Spurs keep Newcastle at bay when they started the game as the better side and remained solid in the second half. Deserves his new deal.

Davinson Sanchez – 7

Another fine performance. Made at least two crucial blocks to stop Newcastle from scoring. Kept busy throughout the game but was up to the task.

Ben Davies – 6

Kept busy by the Newcastle attack but didn’t do much for the team attacking-wise.

Harry Winks – 6

Made sure Spurs had their share of possession in midfield, but couldn’t influence the game from the middle as Newcastle pressed aggressively.

Moussa Sissoko – 7

Solid in midfield. Kept running at Newcastle’s defence and back to stop the Magpies from causing Spurs problems by supporting Aurier on a number of occasions.

Giovani Le Celso – 7

Solid performance in the midfield today. Held the ball well and caused problems for the hosts and on one occasion, he created Son’s goal. More of the same, please.

Lucas Moura – 8

Caused all sorts of problems for Newcastle with his running and pressing. Won the ball back for the first goal.

Son Heung-Min – 7

Didn’t do so much in the game, but he took his goal well and almost had another one, but for a fine save by Martin Dubravka.

Harry Kane – 9

Struggled to get better service again. But played a key part in the first goal and scored two more.

Subs

Steven Bergwijn- 7

Solid assist for the second goal and kept causing problems for Newcastle.

Erik Lamela – 7

Caused problems when he came in and had a hand in Kane’s second goal.

Jan Vertonghen – N/A

Manager

Jose Mourinho – 8

Got another big result, got the team right, his tactics worked, doing his job.

😆 Yeah I used to say it would help if he could actually play football… But hes sorted so much of his game out it’s astonishing. Noone bar Kane tries as hard as him I’m sure.

I say an impressive result and decent performance- especially considering how many games we have played in quick succession recently. Newcastle were bang up for this one. Just imagine how the players would have coped had Poch been in charge – they’d have been totally burned by the Arsenal game. This is good management we’re seeing from Jose now. I like it.

Son fades most games but often he looks like the only player in the side capable of scoring from a half chance and that was true in the first half again – maybe an 8

Have to agree with most of those, but Aurier deserves a ten the man was in deep shock still and he went out like it was another day at the office… And Sissoko deserves an 8 or 9 he is an engine, a marauding tank who appears all over the pitch often covering the full backs and others, and he does alot of the dirty work which for me makes him our unsung hero… If hes not tackling or intercepting then hes covering or causing someone bother somewhere. And these days he seems to keep possession constantly. Hes essential for us now.
