Tottenham player ratings v Burnley – star man gets an 8

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham registered their third consecutive away league win last night against Burnley.

It was a win that keeps Jose Mourinho’s side in the race for the Premier League in these early stages.

It was a hard-fought win and some players stood out, here are the Tottenham player ratings.

Hugo Lloris – 6

Not a busy night for him, but he saved well from Ashley Westwood when he was called into action.

Matt Doherty – 6

Didn’t always get picked out when he made his runs, but he tried to make himself an outlet for the team on the right and it was obvious that Mourinho instructed him to cross the ball at every opportunity and not try to take anyone on.

Toby Alderweireld – 7

Had a busy evening and he won most of the battles. Had to be bandaged because of a head injury, but didn’t drop his effort and made a couple of great tackles at crucial moments.

Eric Dier – 6

Did ok and dealt well with the threats and troubles of Ashley Barnes and Chris Woods.

Ben Davies – 6

Did his job against some tough opponents. He was a willing runner and created a few problems for the Clarets. His crossing is not great though.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 7

He made sure that Spurs won the midfield battle, protected the defence well and distributed the ball well when he had it. Solid shift.

Moussa Sissoko – 6

Back in the team and back with the same energy in midfield and supported Hojbjerg to make sure Spurs won the midfield battle.

Tanguy Ndombele – 7

He has completely turned his Tottenham career around. He was involved in almost everything good in Tottenham’s attacking play, solid performance.

Lucas Moura – 5

Not the best of days for him as he struggled to get into the game, no thanks to some fine defending from Burnley, but he could have done better.

Son Heung-min – 7

Burnley kept him quiet for much of the first half but took his only clear chance when it came his way to continue his fantastic scoring form.

Harry Kane – 8

Struggled to get a chance in the first half because of Burnley’s fine defending, but he defended what might have been Burnley’s opener and then set up Son for the winning goal. His overall contribution was immense and deservedly is the man of the match.

Substitute

Erik Lamela – 6

Caused more problems than Lucas Moura and set up Kane and Son for the winning goal.

Giovani Le Celso – 5

Didn’t have so much time to influence the game.

Joe Rodon – N/A

No. Crosses which completely clear the box hit the 1st man or go out of play are nothing to do with midfielders

Spurs fans are so hard on their fullbacks. Notoriously and historically.

Burnley did a great job with filtering Spurs players to the outsides in the final 3rd. It’s actually the same concept that Mourinho is trying to instill in his Midfield and Defenders to close out matches.

Give spaces outside for multiple players to work, to possess. Entice more players out of the middle in a false sense of accomplishment. Spurs were lulled into it for most of the match until Lamela came in and insisted on working the smaller, tougher spaces.

Take players out of the middle, and suddenly the crosses do look poor… because there are very few Spurs in the middle to receive them… yet there is an abundance of Clarets.

I swear. For years, I have watched these fans rate their fullbacks poorly… when the problem is midfielders who bite on the enticement to pull them out of the middle.

It is not “poor crosses.” There are literally 6 Clarets and only 2-3 Spurs there to try to receive them… because the midfielders get baited into the same false sense of security again and again and again.

But by all means, keep blaming your fullbacks.

By all means, keep scratching your heads when Spurs continue to struggle in breaking down teams that force play to the outside.

I think Jose is due some credit for suggesting the partnership between Kane and Son is also down to Poch.He didn’t have to say it.

Lloris 7 Solid all night and good handling on crosses.
Doherty 4 He looks like square peg in a round hole at the moment.
Toby 7 Solid and unruffled all night.
Dier 7 Equally impressive.
Davies 5 He tries bless him,but offers very little.Much better as LCB.
PEH 6.5 Another hardworking outing.Good signing.
N’Dombele 6.5 Getting better with each match.
Sissoko 6 Grafted well if unspectacular.
Moura 4 Anonymous once again.
Kane 8 Excellent at both ends.Star man.
Son7 Very sharp for his goal and always involved.
Lamela 6 Added some urgency when he came on looking to make things happen
Lo Celso 5 Never really made an impression for the time he was on.

Overall a hard fought 3 points from the type of game we have lost in the past.Puts us in a good position from which we need to push on.

I’ll remember that next time he gets down on one.

Why would he? He’s a professional footballer, not a political party spokesman. It’s a favourite tool of the politically correct/cultural Marxist brigade to try and capitalise on the celebrity of others, especially sportsmen, to promote their own self-serving interests. You see it all the time with the LGBT/rainbow laces drivel and BLM is yet another far-left politically motivated organisation attempting to use professional sportsmen to involuntarily endorse their spurious political agenda.

I agree with most of those grades. Harry Kane’s contribution, at both ends of the pitch, was of course critical. I would give Dier a 7 also, as he and Toby were rock solid in central defence last night. Ndomby and Hojbjerg were class in midfield and Sissoko also worked hard. Most disappointing, were Doherty and Lucas who were mediocre, followed by Ben Davies.

So relieved to see Hugo actually catch the ball instead of punching it a few yards where it’s booted into the back of his net. Davies poor, Doherty uninspiring and barely and upgrade on KWP except he’ll have to hang his boots up a lot earlier. Otherwise the lads mostly came out in credit. Moura his usual Duracell bunny routine without much end result, but his pace frightens teams. Kane and Son world class, Ndombele will be soon. Lo Celso over-rated.

Kane was great. I wonder if he will consent to having his mug on BLM campaign leaflets now they are a registered political party? Or am I being sensitive?

Also that Davies free kick which ballooned out was very poor!

All ratings agreed bar both Davies and Doherty who merit a 5 or 4. Simply not good enough. Obsessed with square passes Davies’ crosses are either under hit or over hit. Also one of his sloppy passes nearly led to a goal. That said he is a useful squad utility player. Regarding Doherty’s fairly conservative approach with his passing he looked good for Wolves making overlapping runs and chipping in with some goals but for us like R Sessegon he is seemingly out of his depth / overawed by joining a bigger club.
