Tottenham player ratings v Arsenal – a win is a win and it is oh so sweet

By Bruce Grove -

It may not have been a classic performance in terms of possession and entertainment but who cares, a win is a win and it does not get any sweeter than against Arsenal, especially after all their bantering over the last week. The Tottenham player ratings are going to be fair but enjoyable this time.

In all fairness, Arsenal did have the majority of the possession in the second half but possession does not win games, goals do and Tottenham had more goals, it is as simple as that.

Tottenham player ratings

Hugo Lloris – 8

Could do nothing to stop Lacazettes screamer but made some important saves and kept Spurs in the game at critical points.

Ben Davies – 6

Did ok I suppose but he is not a top-class full-back and he provides very little down the flanks going forward.

Toby Alderweireld – 9

Match winner and rock-solid in defence, my man of the match.

Davinson Sanchez – 8

Had a good game, was massive in defence considering all the pressure that was invited.

Serge Aurier – 4

Just cannot understand why he is continuously picked, he is just poor, offered nothing going forward, his first touch was woeful and he gave the ball away to Lacazette for the first goal simply because he cannot do a basic thing like control the ball.

Harry Winks – 6

Did ok in the midfield and helped the defence but he has zero creativity in his feet and surely there are better options.

Moussa Sissoko – 6

Same as Winks did his job helping the defence but he just does not have the ability to deliver defence-splitting passes.

Giovani Lo Celso – 7

Ran himself ragged and was all over the middle of the park but he is not being used properly and had very little support in the middle to take the game to Arsenal.

Lucas Moura – 7

Was busy but too often he lost control or failed to feed his teammates in.

Son Heung-min – 8

Great goal and did a load of work upfront but on more than one occasion was guilty of not passing when there was better options available,

Harry Kane – 7

Had a great chance to score in the first half and worked his tail off, he is getting close to full fitness but lack of service is killing his game.

Subs

Steve Bergwijn – not on long enough

Erick Lamela -not on long enough

Oliver Skipp – not on long enough

Manager

Jose Mourinho – 6

Got the win but he was staring at a 2 until Toby netted. Subs came on far too late and his tactics are killing the players. But he won against Arsenal and that is enough for me.

My MOTM against Arsenal was...

😆 I haven’t noticed him but i think he’s there.. Its a strange one Ryan was great on the wing for fulham.. At one point in our injury crisis Maureen said grab your chance for left back its between you and verts.. Verts got owned first because so many pacey wingers now and he’s a centre back all day. Then Maureen said Ryan needs to be more aggressive without the ball and lost too many duels on his debut. He’s not ready for left back so he will compete for left wing, where obviously Sonaldo plays.. I’m not sure Maureen trusts him. He either needs to be getting game time next season either for us or out on loan. Apparently Maureen blocked a Barca move for him last week so hopefully he’ll be playing soon.

I am actually surprised how much this battle of the mid table giants meant.
An interesting point in the PL table – The *rse GA is not as bad as I expected (44 THFC 45) that’s all.

Haven’t noticed but has he even been on the subs bench?

I agree with your first paragraph, its clear money has ruled the game for a while… But Maureen has definitely helped developed young players. Even when he first took over the chavs he had young superstars in the making but many were relatively unknown. Robben, deco, terry, lampard, carvalho were not legends back then… Its almost mythical that he doesn’t give young players a chance. Most recently at Manure he handed out 82 appearances to ten players in his squad that were aged 21 or younger.. So the facts say different…… I would rather win anything in style of course, but winning full stop is the best entertainment.

Sanchez was at fault for the goal he didnt close him down. Toby let aubamayang through 2 or 3 times and he hit the bar one time.. Davies did well that was a scorching shot, first time ever maybe, his shots are usually 30 foot over the bar.. Aurier is a liability but I like him, he gets stuck right in. He’s been improving i thought defensively, hes standing people up now. He desperately needs to sort his final ball out though.

I see it like this, when any team gets a win then you don’t care how. However, teams don’t win all the time and teams with low wage bills and net spends win less generally than ones that pay the going rate and are proactive in the transfer market all the time.

Jose has always had access to ready made of the shelf experienced players to make up his teams. He’s not going to get that at Spurs. Then I look at our competition, even Leicester (bad result today mind) and they just behave in a more proactive way. Liverpool, Citeh,Utd will become the three in the top four every time because of their ambition.

Who knows, perhaps Jose will end up entertaining us while winning big. I just can’t see it ever happening.

Sessy is competing for left wing. So he is competing with son for a place. Maureen said hes not ready for left back which is strange its usually the other way round.. Youre probably right he has to be better than davies, he will be in the long run… Davies did alright yesterday, he had a cracking shot that hit the bar after their keeper got his fingertips to it.

I’m not particularly happy with the style. But this is what we are now. Maureen is stamping his mark now and I like it. The fact we are losers (spursy) has been in our DNA for far too long. Theres no point in playing pretty football if we never win anything. I would much rather beat arsenal like that, than play pretty football and lose 2-3… Maureen is growing on me rapidly.. When asked if europa league was a bad thing he said “No. I have been in europa league twice, i have won it twice. To win it a third time would not be bad” 😆 You say he is a dinosaur and forgotton how to win but in his last job at manure he won three trophies in his first season. We should be embracing the man, he is one of the most succesful managers of all time……. Like you said on another thread 20 years and counting… The truth is if Maureen can’t win us anything under Levy then noone will.

Davies should have scored, gets slagged off a lot but an honest squad player who’s a safer option on the left than old Loonytunes on the right who was to blame for their goal.

Aurier just has to go, he’s sh*te…

Add to that a modern left back as well. I’m not sure why Sessegnon is not getting games, he has to be better than Davies

So good to see us two points above them in the table. It’s been a miserable season but the return of ‘St Totteringhams Day’ would be the final insult…

I’ve said that I’m happy that we won in other posts. Do I like the style of play under Maureen? No I don’t, if you’re happy with it then fine.

It’s part of the Spurs DNA to play the game a certain way, if you’ve forgotten that, I suggest you look at the club’s history. You might learn something.

Woolwich were unlucky today, I’m overjoyed that we won but when we win we grind it out. I mean an average Woolwich side having more possession against Spurs away? We might just finish above them and I hope we do but the bigger long therm picture looks dull as dishwater,,,

At last something to be happy about. Always nice to get the better of them and deserve to imo. Having said that it was only Arsenal, they’ve got more defensive problems than we have. Both of us need new players..

Just having a win like that against them is a nice boost , I woudn’t say we’ve turned the corner as there is a lot to be concerned about, but for now , love it.

Said it for some time now, but the way we play, under Maureen and Poch, is all about the full backs. Just think about how many great positions we balls up with Aurier and Davis – per GAME, let alone per season. If we had quality in those positions we’d score more goals and win more games, no doubt about it for me.

Oh. My God. Spurs beat Arsenal, and actually look half decent for over 50% of the game for the first tine in weeks and you’re still not happy.

Are these ratings just comparative to Woolwich’s? Because in any other game, apart from Toby I wouldn’t rate a player on either side over 6. I guess it’s post lockdown football so we’re going easy.

The Gooners are no longer the scalp they once were, even a couple of years ago…

If we did just one thing and bought a modern right full back who can defend and attack this team would immediately look better. Sissoko would not be continually pulled out of position and it would solidify the midfield and offer more protection for the defence. It would allow Winks to be more creative and spend less time putting out fires. How did this guy get signed by PSG and then us? Just mind boggling.

I thought the first half was entertaining, although Aurier needs posting to Greenland without the correct postage so he gets left in a sorting office. We sat back in the second half and picked them off when needed, although I was worried because we looked shattered, but Lo Celso got a second wind and Kane thought he was a JCB bulldozer! It wasn’t flowing but we got at them, turned them round. Mustafi and Sideshow Bob are hilarious (more please).
