In an attempt to shore things up defensively, Jose Mourinho is reportedly eyeing a reunion with Man Utd’s Chris Smalling.
The 30-year-old has spent this season on loan at Roma and to his credit, he has rediscovered some top form and been a key figure for the Italian outfit.
Having conceded 39 goals in our 28 league games so far this season, a tally which gives us the joint-worst defensive record of the top 10 sides in the Premier League standings, there’s a case to be made that we need to improve defensively.
Further, with Jan Vertonghen’s deal set to expire at the end of the campaign, there might be a void that needs to be filled.
According to The Sun, via Tuttosport, that could see us swoop for Smalling this summer, although it won’t be cheap as it’s added that United want £17m for the England international.
Mourinho knows what he’ll get from the defensive ace, and he has a wealth of experience playing at the highest level. Time will tell though if that translates into us showing a serious interest in prising him to north London this summer.
Much will also depend on the player himself if Roma look to make his move permanent, and so Mourinho may well face stiff competition in trying to land his touted transfer target.
