Tottenham is in desperate need of new blood

Another transfer window, and another series of nail-biting weeks for Tottenham fans, hoping to see Lilywhite smoke emerge from the chimneys in N17. Of course, the club haven’t been entirely inactive, but the activity at rival sides has been enough to keep supporters frustrated.

The only new first-team player with Premier League experience to have got a deal over the line has been Mohammed Kudus, despite what some might have you believe. Finishing seventeenth last season was nothing shy of a catastrophe, not to mention deeply concerning. Yes, winning the Europa League was great, but it did not vaguely paper over the cracks.

The ghost of Postecoglou still hangs over N17

Unless you were in Australia watching the brief highlights, because games were broadcast in the middle of the night over there, the games were routinely turgid, and we lost far too many of them. We lost so many domestic games, we broke a new Premier League record for being the first side to lose 22 games and not get relegated.

The football so far in the preseason sees a return to a style of football that is far more watchable and far less juvenile in its approach, and with better recruiting, should see Thomas Frank mount more of a threat in the division.

Fabrizio Romano arrives with news of a green light

Fabrizio Romano, whose track record is excellent in respect of transfer news, has been routinely excellent, says that the former Fulham fan favourite João Palhinha should be announced by the club in due course.

The veteran knows the league, and Palhinha was a key player in the heart of Fulham’s midfield. Sitting in front of the backline, he is known for his hard tackling. The Portuguese ended the 2023-24 season with the most successful tackles – 154 in total – in the Premier League.

With the option to buy not being mandatory, this is surely a solid deal for all concerned.
