Pundit Noel Whelan reckons that Matt Doherty is the perfect right-back for Tottenham and he has hailed the club’s acquisition of his services as they close in on a move for him.
Doherty has been one of the standout right-backs in the Premier League since he helped Wolves gain promotion back into the English top flight.
He has been on the radar of Spurs over the past few weeks as they seek reinforcements in that position.
They have sold Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton and Serge Aurier might be sold this summer as well, with AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen indicating interest.
Even if the Ivorian remains at the club at the end of this transfer window, he will play second-fiddle to Doherty when the Republic of Ireland international signs and Whelan reckons that his addition to Spurs will be a good one.
He hailed the defender and claimed that he will solve Spurs’ problematic right-back position because he has the right qualities.
Whelan told Football Insider: “I think everybody has admired Doherty over the seasons since he’s been at Wolves – an absolute professional, he’s like your perfect wing-back these days and that’s what you’re looking for.
“He’s competitive, aggressive, defensively very good, he knows how to get forward, he can put a great ball into the box.
“I don’t think Jose Mourinho would be going out there trying to buy this player if he didn’t admire him and hadn’t been watching him over the seasons. It’s been a big problem for
Tottenham, absolutely, because they’ve sold all their right-backs and you can already see they’re negotiating with Aurier to get him out the club.
“I think he’s looking to bring people in with the right character, the right attitude and the right attributes and I think Doherty fits that bill.”
