Despite a frustrating campaign for Tottenham Hotspur, the rise of Lucas Bergvall has been a shining light in an otherwise underwhelming season.
The 19-year-old Swedish midfielder, who officially joined Spurs in the summer after the club beat Barcelona to his signature in January, has swiftly established himself as a key figure in Ange Postecoglou’s midfield.
Following a steady integration period, Bergvall has grown into one of the team’s most influential players, dictating tempo, progressing the ball, and showcasing maturity beyond his years.
He made his first start in a 2-1 League Cup win over Coventry City in September and announced himself in style with a match-winning goal against Liverpool in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final in January.
He was also key to Spurs’ win against AZ in the Europa League round of 16s and stole the show against Man City as well, earning praise from Pep Guardiola himself who called him ‘unstoppable’.
After that match, the City boss said:
“The pace of this team (Tottenham)? Pfft, it is difficult. Maybe Liverpool [are better], but Bergvall, every time he has the ball and run, unstoppable.”
Tottenham set to reward Lucas Bergvall with a new contract
Bergvall’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed at the club. According to Fotboll Direkt, a ‘new contract is in the works’ for the talented teenager, who has exceeded all expectations with his debut season at Spurs.
His current contract is set to expire in 2029 but the club are keen on rewarding him with a new and ‘improved contract’ already, with negotiations ‘signalled this summer’.

Having made 40 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and assisting four, Bergvall has quickly become one of the first names on the team sheet.
At just 19, his composure, work rate, and technical quality mark him out as a potential cornerstone of Spurs’ midfield for years to come.
With the right development and regular minutes, there’s every chance he could blossom into one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders.
A new contract would be a deserved reward for a player who has exceeded expectations and brought genuine excitement to the Tottenham fanbase in a difficult season.
