Tottenham’s bold £70 million bid for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi during the final hours of the January transfer window has fueled speculation about Cristian Romero’s future at the club.
Although Palace rejected the substantial offer, the move has raised questions about Spurs’ defensive plans moving forward.
Tottenham preparing to sell Cristian Romero
John Wenham, a well-connected club insider, suggested that the club’s hefty bid for Guehi might be a sign that they are preparing for Romero’s possible departure.
With no apparent progress on extending the Argentine’s contract, Wenham hinted that Spurs could be laying the groundwork for a long-term replacement.
Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said:
“If Tottenham did offer up to £70m for Guéhi, that is an extreme amount of money.
“It would probably make him one of the most expensive defenders of all time. Therefore, that tells me the club are planning for the departure of Romero, especially as no progress has been made on extending his contract.
“I do think we have to consider that as a real reality now. I like Guéhi, I think he is a good defender. However, is he worth £70m, that I’m not so sure of?”

Romero, who initially joined Tottenham on loan from Atalanta in 2021 before making the move permanent the following year, has been a crucial part of the club’s defence. His aggressive yet composed defensive style and leadership qualities earned him the role of vice-captain ahead of the previous season.
However, this campaign has not gone smoothly for the 26-year-old centre-back. A hamstring injury suffered in December compounded with earlier fitness issues has limited him to just 14 appearances across all competitions, where he managed to net one goal.
Real Madrid want Cristian Romero
Despite being under contract until 2027, rumours surrounding Romero’s future persist. Spanish giants Real Madrid reportedly showed interest in securing his services last summer but were put off by Daniel Levy’s asking price for the World Cup winner. However, they could reignite their pursuit if the defender decides to seek a new challenge, and it is reported that the club will not stand in the player’s way if the Spanish side makes an offer.
Tottenham’s ambitious bid for Guehi highlights their proactive approach to solidifying their defence. Even though the offer was unsuccessful, it signals the club’s readiness to explore defensive alternatives should Romero opt for a transfer.
As the season continues, Spurs supporters will be eager to see how this situation unfolds. Whether Romero will remain a cornerstone of their defence or Tottenham eventually brings in a new face like Guehi remains to be seen.
