Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing the Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini.
According to Fabrizio Romano the talented young defender is on Tottenham’s radar and they were considering a move for him last summer.
However, the Italian outfit were demanding an absurd amount of money for the central defender and Tottenham eventually chose to cool their interest in the player.
They are still monitoring the player’s development and it remains to be seen whether they decide to make a move for him during the January transfer window.
Speaking on KICK (via TBR ), the Italian said: “We have the best Italian player U21 winning the award right now. This is Giorgio Scalvini.
“The centre-back of Atalanta, a very talented player, we know him very well in Italy, not as known in Europe, but he is very good.
“He’s on the radar of many clubs, for example, I heard, last summer, Tottenham were considering a move, he was one of the secret players that they had in the list at Tottenham, but they decided to go for something different because Atalanta were asking crazy money for Scalvini.”
Summer signing Micky van de Ven has picked up a significant injury and Tottenham are in need of defensive reinforcements.
Scalvini could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition for them and it remains to be seen whether the North London outfit decide to test Atalanta’s resolve with an offer in January.
The opportunity to join a big Premier League club will be an attractive option for the player and he is likely to be tempted to complete the move.
Tottenham certainly have the financial muscle to tempt the Italian club into selling their prized prospect and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops.
Scalvini has the potential to develop into a top-class defender and Ange Postecoglou could help him fulfil his tremendous potential.
Regular football in the Premier League could accelerate his development and help him improve as a player. It would be a step up in his career and he would get to test himself against the best attackers in the world.
