Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon on deadline day.

As per GMS, the French outfit turned down an approach from the Premier League club because they did not want to let a key player leave late in the window. They would have struggled to replace him.

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham come back with an offer for him when the transfer window reopens in January.

Malick Fofana is an elite talent

The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the finest young attacking talents in European football right now. The Belgian has established himself as a key player for Lyon, and he registered 17 goal contributions last season. He will add pace, flair and unpredictability to the Tottenham attack if he joins the club. He could’ve been a solid long-term acquisition for Tottenham.

He is unlikely to be a cheap acquisition, and he could cost a premium. It remains to be seen how the situation develops. The opportunity to join Tottenham will be exciting for the player. It would be a step up for him, and he would get to test himself in the Premier League. He has been linked with other Premier League clubs as well.

Can Spurs sign Fofana in the future?

The player is highly rated across Europe, and he has been described as someone with ‘top-level potential’. If Tottenham can nurture him properly, they could have a future star on their hands. Thomas Frank has done well to groom attacking players at Brentford, and he could play a key role in Fofana’s development.

It has been an impressive window for Tottenham so far, but they could certainly use more quality if they want to compete for major trophies. It remains to be seen whether they decide to improve the squad further in January.
