“He is someone Tottenham will…” – Spurs expert makes transfer claim about midfielder

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso is expected to leave North London this summer.

The Argentine international is eager to depart due to the limited playing time he has seen in the ongoing campaign.

According to club insider and lawyer John Wenham, Spurs could sell Lo Celso for a significant sum, similar to his current market value, following reports emerging from Spain.

According to the Spanish news outlet Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are keen to secure the midfielder’s services and are prepared to offer £17 million, as Diego Simeone is a huge admirer of the player.

Lo Celso has struggled to get consistent chances for the Lilywhites this season, appearing in 17 Premier League matches while being on the pitch for just 464 minutes.

Despite the 27-year-old making an impact in the limited time he’s had on the field, providing two goals and two assists, he hasn’t been regularly featured in the starting lineup. He’s only started four matches, which amounts to just 13% of the games. (Transfermarkt)

In an interview with Tottenham News, John Wenham expressed doubts about Lo Celso’s future at the club under Ange Postecoglou.

Wenham emphasised the Argentine’s inconsistency and frequent spells on the sidelines due to injuries as major concerns.

He pointed out that whenever Lo Celso has shown promise, he has subsequently faced prolonged periods of unavailability, causing frustration among fans and the coaching staff.

He said:

“Lo Celso was recently awarded with a plaque for reaching 100 Tottenham appearances. However, those 100 appearances accumulate to just seven full 90 minutes, having joined the club in 2019, which is just mind-blowing.

“Some people have suggested to me that Lo Celso should play when James Maddison isn’t performing, but he can’t be relied upon.

“Every time he has done something good this season, he has then followed that up by being unavailable for two or three weeks.

“It is incredibly frustrating, and he is someone Tottenham will be moving on this summer.”

With less than 18 months left on his Spurs contract, which expires in June of the following year, Lo Celso’s situation prompts the Lilywhites to aim to sell him this summer.
