“Schoolboyish, basic stuff” damning words from former Spur aimed at Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou’s days are indeed numbered at this stage. Professional sports are a results-based business, and yesterday’s latest loss against fellow relegation scrap fodder Wolverhampton Wanderers was symptomatic of a season in absolute turmoil.

We were told it was an injury crisis, but with virtually every single first-choice player back in the squad, the light at the end of the tunnel was simply the front of an oncoming train.

Everybody has had their say on another loss for the beleaguered Australian. Danny Murphy, a former Tottenham man and regular TV and radio pundit, didn’t hold back.

“Some of their defending was schoolboyish, basic stuff! Yes, they played some nice patterns and they made some nice chances, they’ve got some good players, so of course they’re going to do that.

“But sorry, Ange, that’s not good play. It’s good forward play, but good play is being competitive in a game by being organised, defensive at times, being good going forward, recovery runs, winning second balls.”

Our view

Spurs have scored many goals this season, despite none of their traditional front men truly making their mark in front of goal.

Ange Postecoglou appears entirely out of his depth, and his press conferences are now just word salads of apology, regret and confusion. Murphy is always measured in his critiques, and the situation has now come to a head.

Will Ange prepare and lead out the side to play against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, as he seems beyond the point of inspiring much confidence?
