Tottenham ‘close’ to beating Manchester United and Chelsea to the signing of ‘highly promising’ Englishman

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur are set to sign Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United.

The contract of the ‘highly promising’ defender expires at the end of the season, and after already impressing at senior level, he is now attracting interest from Premier League clubs including Spurs.

Manchester United and Chelsea have both scouted the England U17 international in recent months, however, according to The Daily Mail, Tottenham are ‘close’ to signing Phillips this summer.

Fabio Paratici, Tottenham’s Director of Football, is expected to attend Blackburn’s game against Reading on Wednesday evening, where a final decision will be made.

Phillips is a five-cap England under-17 international who has played twice for Rovers this season, once in the Championship and once in the Carabao Cup.

Spurs have been busy recruiting defensive players this summer, and a deal for Phillips would bring their total to four.

With interest from some of England’s most powerful clubs, Blackburn may be forced to sell the towering defender. However, Phillips holds the cards in this situation, as he can force a move by letting his contract expire if the club does not let him leave this summer.
