Tottenham ace ‘appreciated by Mourinho’, January move on the cards

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months.

He has fallen down the pecking order at the North London club and he needs to leave in order to play regular first-team football.

A report via Calciomercato claims that AS Roma are now keen on signing the 29-year-old England international and they could look to provide him with an escape route in January. The 29-year-old is versatile enough to operate as a defensive midfielder, a central defender as well as a right back. He could prove to be a very useful squad option for Roma if they managed to secure his services.

His current contract with Tottenham expires in the summer of 2024 and therefore he is likely to be available for a reasonable price in January as well.

The defender has worked under Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s time at Tottenham and a potential reunion will be an attractive proposition for both parties. The report states Dier is ‘appreciated by Mourinho’.

It remains to be seen whether Roma can get the deal done.

Tottenham will need to bring in a quality replacement if the England international moves on in January. They have signed two quality defenders in Micky van de Ven and Ashley Phillips. They could certainly use another central defender to bolster their defensive ranks.

Meanwhile, the 29-year-old needs to play regularly at this stage of his career and a move to Roma would be ideal for him.
