Tony Cascarino questions Conte’s faith in average Tottenham player

By Saikat -

Tony Cascarino has now questioned Antonio Conte’s show of faith in the Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier despite mediocre performances this season.

Dier has had his fair share of criticism over a number of years and Cascarino fields that he would be a good player for a mid-table club. However, it is difficult to understand why so many Tottenham managers have put their faith in him over the years.

Cascarino also feels that Spurs need to rebuild their defence and get rid of the England international.

“Can someone explain to me how so many successive Tottenham managers have fallen in love with Eric Dier? He is an honest, decent player who could be OK for a mid-ranking Premier League team, but he cannot be a main centre half for a team competing for the Champions League,” he told The Times.

“He has a bad habit of standing off forwards as they advance on goal. He did it against Leicester again on Saturday. The Spurs back line needs rebuilding but not around Dier.”

There is no doubt that Eric Dier could be a quality squad player for Tottenham Hotspur, but a club hoping to challenge for the major trophies should have better starters at their disposal.

Tottenham have been linked with a number of defenders in recent months and they managed to bring in Pedro Porro from Sporting CP during the January transfer window. It will be interesting to see if they can sign a quality centre-back at the end of the season now.

Bundesliga defender Piero Hincapie is reportedly on their radar but the London club would have to pay a fee in excess of £50 million for him.

Meanwhile, Spurs have to finish in the Champions League positions in order to attract top-class talents and the humiliating defeat against Leicester City will have certainly dented their top four hopes.

Spurs put on a shambolic defensive display against Leicester and Dier was a part of the backline that was brutally exposed against the Foxes.
