Thumping An Outfit That Might Fare Better In The Eurovision Song Contest Is No Big Deal – opinion

By The Boy -

No two ways about it, that was an emphatic win last night, and so this seems a pertinent opportunity to remind ourselves that the phrase, ‘you can only beat who’s in front of you‘ actually has no meaning or substance to it whatsoever. Much like the ever tedious ‘careful what you wish for‘, these are in fact nonsequiturs designed to stifle free expression. If you disagree with a point being made, then articulate why.

What did we learn from watching Spurs put another 4 goals past Wolfsberger? For me, this only proved that we were playing a sorry bunch of Austrians that would probably fare better in the Eurovision Song Contest, than the Europa League.

Dele Alli scored, made 2 assists, and 3 shot assists. Gareth Bale scored and made 1 shot assist, against Wolfsberger. If they can cause as much havoc against any of our forthcoming Premier League opponents, then the boys will have my curiosity. If they can turn it on again, against Manchester City in the League cup final, then and only then, they will have my attention.

Is that a miserable outlook? Well, that’s how professional sports works. No cups and no medals for turning over a side that are out of their depth.

Little more than a training exercise and that’s being generous.

Respect needs to put on domestic cups at tottenham. Without them 12 what would we have to show for nearly 140 years playing the bloody game. 3 European cups and two league titles. Others can devalue it. I ain’t.

What has any of that got to do with a celebration in the community?

Keep seeing its a pointless cup. But whos won it 3 times in a row & probably 4. City. Mostly cups won by the big boys. So winning them is worth it , & habit forming & confidence building.

The League Cup was developed in the 60’s to give teams who couldn’t win the FA Cup something to play for. The prize for winning is £100k, that is 1/6 of Gareth Bale’s fee for playing in it.

The FA Cup was permanently devalued in the 90’s when all the Champions League spots were give to the premier league. So if the FA Cup is now rather pointless how is a Cup which actually costs money to win it something to cheer about? Don’t get me wrong I will celebrate also if we win but winning it and being happy about it is for teams of the calibre of West Ham, not for top tier teams. I guess it’s time to be honest about what kind of team I support.

Putting 4 past that lot was a par performance, in terms of the result. What we really needed to see was our defence not offering them a single sniff of our goal. Sadly, that part of our game wasn’t up to scratch; and we’d likely have shipped 3 to any of the bigger boys.

Lovely H. That opening paragraph sounds like a verse from Maggie’s Farm.
Religion exists because folk need a saviour.
I’m a long way from expectIng Gareth Bale to skip across a lake like a golfball.

A win can only help to boost the confidence levels during the current slump.
We have a lot of previous when it comes to lowly opponents being the banana skin.

I think you’ve misplaced your expectations, the league shows where we deserve to be. We could perform better but this is our form since the start of 2019

The round of 32 is to clear out the last of the lowly opposition. The tournament only really start s from the next round. But if it builds a bit of confidence from a relatively reasonable performance let’s take it.

“If you disagree with a point being made, then articulate why.”

Exactly what I did last week (articulately). My post was then removed with no explanation and further posts subject to “moderation”. 😂

Mikey mouse cup” only spurs fans who don’t live here call it that. What do they care about the community coming together for a jolly up with the open top bus like the old days. And they talk about protecting our history. ANY CUP TO TOTTENHAM PLEASE. people are missing the point

I learned that Bergwijn can’t even do it against a low level side.

We learnt that these little low rent teams are just that. Austrian football learned tottenham ain’t playing. In awe in all aspects. We put a few passed’m, gave’m a rosette then sent’m home. Low gear work. He’s right though, it’s about dealing with big teams like that consistently. That’s pending

On the very few occasions they got into decent positions, Dier looked decidedly uncomfortable, even risking conceding a foul/penalty once.

I would agree that being impressive against Wolfsberger isn’t proof enough someone is actually good – but what about if you look poor against them, like Doherty, Dier, and Vinicius in the first half?

Unfortunately we have not beaten anyone this season who was in any sort of form, even during that allegedly amazing early spell.

League positions of the ten teams beaten by Spurs in 2020-21 season.

Saints were in 10th
Man U 14th
Burnley 18th
Brighton 16th
WBA 18th
Man City 10th
Arse 14th
Leeds 10th
Sheff Utd 20th
WBA 19th

The positive is our next three opponents are in the bottom half.

We learnt that we can’t defend a simple diagonal ball from midfield with two defenders marking one very average attacker. Oh wait, we already know that Dier has poor positioning, is too short, and hasn’t the pace to make up for his shortcomings.

We need to develop a solid back-three with Rondon and Tanganga plus maybe Davis? Going with Dier because of his attitude or Sanchez because of his physicality hasn’t worked all season.

What was nice was Ali looked to be really enjoying himself as did Bale. Maybe it’s a sign they have both fallen back in love with the game or maybe it’s just a sign they have found their new level.

‘you can only beat who’s in front of you‘… No we couldn’t. Go back 3 days and we were facing a semi-competent West Ham team and we couldn’t beat them. Go back 10 days and we faced relegation threatened Brighton who’ve never won at home this season. Couldn’t beat them either. In PL, we couldn’t beat who’s in front of us 5 out of last 6 times. And the 1 we did beat was statistically one of the worst teams in league history. In FA and Carabao cup, we beat non league and championship sides but when faced the a half decent Everton, we couldn’t beat who’s in front of us.
