“They would be open to offers” – Sky Sports journalist confirms Spurs are looking to sell star ‘soon’

By Mehdi Gokal -

Since returning to north London, Tottenham’s team has had trouble getting going because half of the players were in Qatar for the World Cup last month.

They demonstrated their pre-World Cup form in a hard-fought draw against Brentford and then went on to lose 2-0 to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in what was yet another abysmal performance by Antonio Conte’s men.

A lot has been said regarding their uninspiring performances this season with many blaming the Italian manager’s style of play for their dreadful approach to the games. But it is a method that has been successful for Conte at every club he has managed and therefore you can not blame the Conte ball just yet.

Conte has stated multiple times before that it will take at least a couple of more transfer windows until he has built the team he wants. At the moment there are quite a few areas in the team that needs to be addressed.

One of the positions that Spurs have struggled mightily so far is the right wing-back position. Conte has three options right now: Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty, and Djed Spence.

Emerson Royal has been terrible. He has failed to provide any attacking threat from the position that is key to Conte’s style of play. Defensively too, he has struggled this season. And according to the latest report, the Brazilian had a falling out with a coaching staff which has led to him being dropped for the last two games.

Meanwhile, Spence is not considered a Conte signing and does not reportedly trust him for the position just yet and Doherty who has started the last two games for Spurs has not been inspiring either.

And according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, Spurs could sell the Irishman soon.

Speaking to Last Word on Spurs, Thomas said:

“They would be open to offers for Matt. They were open to offers in the summer.

“He has not quite done it at Tottenham, I don’t think he has hit the potential that they thought they would.

“It is definitely an area of concern for Conte, because he doesn’t seem to be able to settle on a player who he prefers in that position.”

It could mean that Spurs could be looking to bring in a new right-sided fullback in January with them being heavily linked with Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Porro.
