Tottenham Hotspur signed James Maddison during the summer transfer window and the former Leicester City midfielder has been outstanding for his new club.
The 26-year-old has managed to hit the ground running and his performances have been hugely impressive.
Former Arsenal player and popular pundit Paul Merson has now revealed on Sky Sports that Maddison will now need to add consistency to his game and he will need to turn up for the big games.
“Can he do it consistently in the huge games? This a huge game on Monday and he certainly has the ability to turn up. I think that can also come with experience, getting more exposure in these big matches, especially now he’s at a bigger club.
“He is a special footballer. He makes things happen and what I also like about him is the fact he is not shy. He will go and get the ball and he will never hide from it.
“As this season goes on, though, he will have to find solutions. Teams did manage to stop him playing at Leicester and he will be highlighted as the player that makes Spurs tick. There will be plans to stop him and when he is tightly marked, that is when he will have to come up with a response.”
The 26-year-old produced an impressive performance against Arsenal earlier this season and he will be expected to make a big difference against Chelsea on Monday night as well.
Merson also believes that Maddison’s performances will have been noticed by the other Premier League clubs and they will look to target the £45 million midfielder for the remainder of the season.
The former Arsenal player expects Maddison to be marked closely by Premier League defenders now and it remains to be seen whether the England international can still continue to produce impressive performances with the limelight on him.
There is no doubt that the 26-year-old is a quality player and he will look to build on his impressive start to life at Tottenham and help them return to the UEFA Champions League.
Spurs need his ingenuity, technical ability and vision in the final third if they are to create ample opportunities against Chelsea.
