‘There has been talk…’: Journalist claims Spurs interest in 26-yr-old PL outcast is ‘real’

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur have linked with a surprise move for the Everton defender Ben Godfrey.

Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that Tottenham hold a genuine interest in the 26-year-old defender, but a move might not materialise in January.

Jones said on the Ranks FC podcast: “Ben Godfrey at Everton, he’s played two games so far this season and he can’t get a game because of Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite.

“There has been talk of a transfer for a while, particularly the links with Tottenham, which are true, they are real and they have a level of interest in him, but I’m not sure that will happen this month.”

It is no secret that Tottenham will have to add more depth to their central defensive unit and Godfrey would be a useful acquisition. He has not had ample game time at Everton and he could be tempted to move if there is an opportunity ahead of him. He has started just one league game this season.

A move to Tottenham and would certainly be a major step up for him and he will look to join a big club capable of winning trophies. Tottenham have done well to sign Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin this season. They could still use another quality central defender and Godfrey would be a superb addition.

He was regarded as one of the finest young defensive prospects in the country during his time at Norwich City and a move away from Everton could help him get his career back on track.

He could certainly use a fresh start right now and Ange Postecoglou could help him rebuild his form and confidence. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham act on their interest at the end of the season and try to sign him for a knockdown price.

Given his situation at Everton, he could be available for a reasonable price in the summer.
