Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
The 28-year-old is expected to leave Manchester City this month in order to play regular first-team football and Spurs are keeping tabs on him.
According to journalist Paul Brown, the midfielder would be an ‘absolutely brilliant’ addition to the Spurs midfield and he is a cut above the other players linked with the London club. However, there is one issue Tottenham will have to deal with.
The 28-year-old male wants to stay in the north of England, and therefore a move to Tottenham might not appeal to him. He has been linked with clubs like Newcastle United as well.
“I think Phillips is a cut above anyone I’ve seen Tottenham linked with,” the journalist said to GiveMeSport. “I think he would be absolutely brilliant at Spurs. I think he would thrive there.
“He could play several roles in that midfield, and I think he’d be excellent. The only issue here is that I understand that Phillips wants to stay in the north, and if he moves, he’d be looking to move to a club a little closer to home.
“So, it may be that Spurs won’t push too hard in the race to sign him. A few clubs are in the running to get Phillips, and they are more likely to get him than Spurs.”
It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can convince the player to move to London. They could certainly use more quality and depth in the middle of the park. Phillips will help protect the central defence and allow the creative players to play with more freedom.
He knows the league well and he should be able to make an immediate impact as well.
Furthermore, the midfielder is used to playing in a high intensity attacking system from his time at Leeds. He could thrive in Ange Postecoglou’s system at Tottenham.
Regular football at the London club could help him get back to his best and cement his place in the England national team for the upcoming European Championships.
