Null & Voiding: Football Needs To Maintain It’s Amoral Course|opinion

By Bruce Grove -

If the season is declared void, which is a strong possibility, it would be grossly unfair on Liverpool, Leeds United, Sheffield United, Leicester City and so many other clubs but so what.

Of course, this is selfish and morally questionable but I simply do not care, the priority for me is that Tottenham benefit.

It is very true, for the most part, that fans of clubs that have a terrible season want the season voided and that those with most to lose do not. That is called the real world and those that will suffer from a void season need to wake up and smell the coffee.

Football is tribal, it is personal and emotional, that is why it is held up to a different standard to most other business, that is why the highly paid players are expected to act differently to other highly paid individuals from other business sectors.

It was unfair that Tottenham was denied a Champions League place following Chelsea’s win over Bayern Munich to win the competition. Did anyone care? No, in fact, the fans from all our rivals loved it and took every opportunity to rub our noses in it.

This is a dog eat dog world when it comes to supporting your team and as far as I am concerned if we can somehow get into next seasons Champions League then I will take it without any guilt or remorse.

History is littered with this sort of happening, do you think Denmark gave a damn when they lifted the European Championship back in 1992 when they did not even qualify for the tournament? They only qualified because Yugoslavia disintegrated due to a civil war that cost the lives of hundreds of thousands and they were disqualified from participating. Where were the howls of outrage then?

If we benefit then good because I seriously do not care about Liverpool winning the title or the fairness of it, I don’t care if Leicester City or Sheffield United miss out, I really do not and if I was to say otherwise then I would be lying.

Lots of people convinced that the 2020/21 season is going to start and everything is going to be fine! If this present season is null and void what happens to next season if the virus pops back into our lives? We then get two seasons in the toilet. I really can’t understand why this season cannot finish, as long as there is a bit of patience. Too much has been invested in the season and I think some integrity would be lost. If I supported a positive outcome for Spurs out of this we’d be no better than the travellers down the road who stitched it to us 100 years ago. If those bribing cheats were to lose the title or a Ch Lg place so be it, but thankfully they are as bad as us at the moment.

As I understand they propose to use points per game ratio.

In that league Ajax and AZ both had the same points, so it would have been unfair. PSG had a big lead as do Liverpool. Despite having no champions, they also game the CL place to Ajax, who were ahead of AZ on goal difference.

I’m sure FIFA have stated the season can NOT be voided – so present league positions will stand, at the very least!?
So far, only the French & Dutch leagues have both been permanently suspended but with very different outcomes; France declared champions & relegations, Holland have neither. Current league standings being used for Euro competitions in both for next season.
The Premier League need to sort themselves out & stop this supposed nonsense/logistical impossibility about football returning (next month 🙄) behind closed doors at neutral venues, etc, etc.

Current standings can’t be used as not all teams have played the same amount of games.

They cancelled the Dutch league with no champions.

They cancelled the French league and PSG were awarded champions. The same would presumably happen with Liverpool if they did the same here.

Harry, is this even a possibility -that the current standings don’t get awarded Euro places? As I understand it no one is even contemplating using last years standings to qualify for Euro places.

If they cancel the season, the current standings will be used so to that end, Leicester chelsea and Sheff Utd could well be very happy with the situation.

I can’t see how football can sort this out in a way to please everyone. If they say right it ends here all the relegated lots will cry for obvious reasons. I can’t see them getting the time to finish this and stsrt nxt with the euros already moved. And as for the bin dippers. Dunno what to say really…. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Unlikely it will be voided, more likely to let present League placings stand, which would mean no European football and reduced income from finishing eighth. Mourinho is now described as a three year manager. Well his first year is a wash out, not all his fault obviously, next season will be a rebuilding one and his third year is when Spurs win their trophies. I don’t see it myself but you can but hope.
