The future of recent Tottenham signing looking shaky after Mourinho report

By Bruce Grove -

When Tottenham signed Matt Doherty for just £15 million from Wolves in the summer, many considered the move to be a good one.

The Republic of Ireland international had been showing fine form at Wolves since they got promoted back to the Premier League.

Several teams wanted him and Spurs were certain that they had found an upgrade on the error-prone Serge Aurier.

But Doherty has been so poor that the Ivorian is back ahead of him in the pecking order.

ESPN says Jose Mourinho has been unimpressed with the results that Doherty has been delivering and the Special One is open to selling him.

It says that the wing-back has until the end of this season to save his Tottenham career or he will be sold.

Mourinho has made his standing in the team obvious by starting him just twice this year.

Even in the absence of Aurier, Mourinho has fielded Japhet Tanganga instead of him.

With his team underperforming, it will be hard for the former Chelsea boss to keep giving chances to an underperforming player.

However, the decision to sell or keep him will be made by Daniel Levy and Doherty will hope he gets a stay verdict from the Spurs’ chairman.

For reasons unknown he has undoubtedly failed to live up to expectations, but in truth he was nothing out of the ordinary at Wolves, just a player in form. However nobody will ever reach the heights, or should I say the lows of Sissoko in his first season, utterly outrageous and unforgivable.

Your correct in the respect that the doc played as a wing back in aback three.Any Wolves fan would tell you that Doherty was not good in a back four. I think the only reason Spurs bought him was that he always played well against teams that Jose managed.Wolves fans were not happy when he went.He scored goals and had lots of assists. Not been replaced yet, although Semedo getting better ,now he is used to the pace of the prem.Always thought that the transfer was a strange one.

Wolves have a particular style of play very different to other PL teams. Doc fitted this style well but had problems when playing for Ireland as a fullback.Wolves really missing his wingback running and heading ability in both defence and attack

Portuguese transfer so I suppose that’s why the special one got gedson Fernandez instead of Bruno gave Davies a new contract

This was a real Portuguese transfer if I remember the chat at the time. The Wolves manager is Portuguese, the agent who brings a lot of players to Wolves is Portuguese, I think his name is Mendes and he just happened to be Doherty and the managers agent and also I think a friend of Mourinho.

At the time it looked like we had pulled off quite a coup, one of the best attacking fullbacks for a very decent price. I think the Wolves fans weren’t too happy about it. Hasn’t worked out which happens some players just don’t work with certain clubs.

Perhaps we need the Wolves manager in to get the best out of him?

I feel that seeing as he’s a Gooner that our sympathy for the lad should only extend so far. Like, not at all…

A bit like hiring Jose and resigning Bale…

Well, on paper this looked a foolproof signing near enough – things aren’t always that simple.

I’m suspecting that Jose had nothing to do with signing him or his form? The manager has nothing to do with these things, right?

His passing has been freakishly bad so far but then if that clicked you might have a player, desperately needs some form

Utter shite. This is not the kind of standard that should be accepted at serious footballing clubs. I despair at the number of times these wing backs with time on the ball try and cross the ball via the Magic Roundabout.

His crosses yesterday do an injustice to the word crossing if thats what they were meant to be!!

Coming with high expectations, a massive hit for Wolves yet for us a major disaster. Probably one of our most underwhelming signings ever. With his confidence shot to bits, always looking stern, completely out of his depth at Spurs, having virtually contributed absolutely nothing apart from his assist for Kane’s last gasp goal at the Hawthorns against WBA, slow and cumbersome it’s best that he is offloaded in the summer!!
